10 Idaho Statesman reporters — more than half the staff — were laid off Thursday by McClatchy Media, our hedge-fund-backed owner.

Sadly, many don’t have large savings to sustain them while looking for new positions. Please consider donating to help reporters cover their bills. Any amount helps!

I’m part of this corporate blood bath. After dodging layoffs for my entire 19-year career, I finally caught a stray as the Idaho Statesman gutted 60% of its staff.

My last day will be Oct. 11. I’m not sure what comes next. Thankfully, I’m part of a union and will receive 6 months of severance.
Yesterday, McClatchy laid off more than 90 unionized media workers across 17 publications.

The departure of these talented reporters, visual journalists & writers will immediately leave gaping holes in local coverage for dozens of communities across the US.

Miami Herald's deputy investigations editor on McClatchy's layoffs today: “Now, they can move chess pieces around, but how do you do that when you have no chess pieces left? As I understand it, this would be 30 overall slots (eliminated) in a newsroom that was already under 80 positions.”

This comes on the heels of a recent signed contract after years of dedicated negotiations from this union. I am so sad for our reporters at The Idaho Statesman and for all of the journalists impacted by these layoffs. McClatchy is a blight on local news, and it is a huge loss for us all.

The Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild is shocked and disappointed by McClatchy’s decision to lay off 33% of its unionized workers at the Idaho Statesman, The News Tribune (Tacoma), Tri-City Herald, The Olympian and Bellingham Herald. McClatchy's embrace of AI slop has rapidly destroyed the trust hardworking journalists like Caitlin have built up for decades.

Hedge funds like Chatham Asset Management should not be allowed to own news organizations.

The executives should be laid off instead.
I, the only data reporter at the Charlotte Observer, am among the McClatchy layoffs in the bloodbath today. The HR person asked me not to talk about it! AMA.

Anyway, here’s a link to one of my most important stories this year.
