A colourful end to the day here in Glastonbury. It was worth the walk I think. Now it is time for a glass of wine 🍷

Thursday - a fine afternoon, ideal for visiting RHSWisley, Surrey, recent drought capital of UK.

Gardens superb, as usual; southern half of main lake just a puddle and many shrubs had badly scorched leaves - never seen anything like that. They irrigate so assume due to strength of hot sunshine.

Paris, France, has now recorded 100 days above 25°C (77°F) in 2026 so far. This has never happened before in a calendar year since records began 154 years ago, in 1872.

The Channel 4 expose on Reform is telly ecstasy. Prestige TV is great but can it beat watching Nigel Farage, James Orr and James Johnson getting stitched up for blatant corruption? No it cannot

My rainfall here in Molesey, Surrey.

August total: 9.6mm - can anyone beat that ? (i.e. lower, in the UK). LTA is around 55mm.

July and August total 9.6mm.

So grass still yellow here.......

Here in the UK, 2018 was the hottest summer on record, then 2025 was the hottest summer on record and now 2026 is the hottest summer on record as well as being very dry. Here is a climate/weather summary for the past 12 months showing the multiple heatwaves we have had. #globalwaming #climatechange

Projection has become reality

22 years ago, Christoph Schär et al. published a landmark paper in Nature explaining that the 2003 heatwave was a harbinger of things to come. The study featured an iconic figure - shown in countless lectures - illustrating how outlandish the event was at the time

Here we see a radar image showing a shower neatly missing Molesey (the 'East' of East Molesey is obscured by the light blue) - not a drop fell here. Just a trace today - a major shower-fail.

Dire state of the garden continues.
Here we go! Streatham Hill in the firing line for some heavier rain ina string of showers IF it holds together in the next 20 minutes.

A whopping 1.3mm in Molesey, Surrey from Tuesday night's cold front. A friend in Brussels reports 25mm from the same system.
Isn't that nice.

As you can see, Bushy Park on Surrey / London borders is now green and verdant again. 😱

Well at least Weds evening was quite sparkling.

“Is a River Alive?” asked @robgmacfarlane.bsky.social
Right now, the River Mole is on life support, having dried up in the Mole Gap on 1 Aug— repeating ’22, ’76 & ’49. The EA fish rescue last week moved hundreds to safer flows saving them from the drying pools turning into algal soup.

Here is the July rainfall anomalies map (from the monthly hydrological summary of CEH), data from the Met Office.

So much better than the map the Met Office issued to the public, identifying areas failing to reach 0.1%, i.e. no measurable pptn., albeit derived from 0.2mm tipping bucket gauges.

.......and the grey thing is called a cloud.

'Library image' Sarah?
This colour is called 'green'. Its a naturally occurring phenomenon which takes place when you apply water to plants.

Some of us have bemoaned the lack of useful detail on the July rainfall %s map of the UK as it only showed areas <20%rather than the extent of 0 pptn.

The July hydrological summary from CEH provides such a map - from the MO. Link to current review here

From a father's friend. The hills above Crickhowell are still burning. Smoke in the house again last night. There appears to be five major fires in Wales now. The same as the whole of France.

Nope, it’s the weeks of hot, dry weather made more severe by global heating due to fossil fuel burning that has increased the risk of wildfires. The landscape is so dry that any ignition can start a fire that becomes uncontrollable. Fields of crops and grasses are not “rewilded” but have burned

A temperature above 37°C has only been recorded on nine days in the UK since records began – three of those occasions have now been in 2026, including today.

Reading University has recorded its warmest August day on record (since 1908), and second warmest day overall.

I expect no-one will see this now (in Europe) but a few spots in England warming up late this evening - subsidence inversion for some upland sites.

But Morecambe nearly 27C at 22Z & 23Z (warmest place); air being drawn down in foehn-like situation, local winds ESE, reinforced by land breeze?
