Neurodivergent RN, wife, mom, science nerd, manic pixie forest crone. She/her.
Homeschooler, but believes in kids’ rights and teaches about things like Black and Indigenous history and lots of science, so kind of a lonely homeschooler.

None of us are safe until all of us are safe. None of us are free until all of us are free.

it shouldn’t have to happen to you to matter to you.

Nobody gets thrown under the bus in a just world, which is what we should all be striving for without compromise. Human rights are non-negotiable.
I do not understand the folks furious at trans people for responding in anguish when the party that they've been told would protect them treats their existence as negotiable.

I do not understand thinking trans folks have political power and responsibility where candidates have none.

I just got an email about a textbook my kids need to have for the first day of a homeschool enrichment class that starts 14 hours & 20 minutes after the email was sent.
Off to a great start, everybody who is all “public school this and that is why I homeschool” is full of shit. Nothing’s perfect.

note that you do not have to do one damn thing to the customers to make this work, you just need to bring the exploitable vagueness of the supplements market under the regulatory umbrella

I’m an RN and very pro-science-based medicine. I’m
AuDHD, so MAHA would want to, at best, send me to a camp or something. However, I also have been dealing with chronic illnesses and have begun to understand how some people end up going down the woo pipeline (that can end up at MAHA).
It’s the enormous failure of the medical system to be trustworthy that has *created* space for the MAHA movement to flourish. If the US medical industrial complex was ethical, moral, and inclusive MAHA wouldn’t exist.

This article I wrote back in 2019 is unfortunately more relevant then ever.

This is relevant because a major argument of those who claim the pandemic originated in a lab leak is that the "CGG-CGG" insertion in the SARS-2 furin-cleavage site (FCS) is so exceedingly unlikely that only lab manipulation could have produced it.

I've spent that past 2 weeks beating my head against the wall trying to wrangle the most incorrigibly unruly mutation type of all—insertions.

I'm sure I'll find some more fine-tuning to do, but I'm finally satisfied with the results and will share a quick summary of them in this 🧵.

Since I posted this ~2 weeks ago, we've seen two new insertions in SARS-CoV-2 sequences, and both fit well into the typical pattern we've long seen: Lots of G's (6/9, 5/12) & no close matches in the viral genome.

Both contain "CGG"; one has "CGGCGT".

Both singlets but high-quality sequences.

My goal is to be a parent that my kids don’t ever feel the need to cut off. To love and accept them, and to deal with conflicts with respect, both when they were young and as they are growing into adulthood. Why is that so difficult for some in my generation to understand?
This has been a slowly metastasizing moral panic for years: Liberals, drunk on therapy-speak, are cutting off their parents over minor slights and miscommunications.

There is little evidence of the underlying phenomenon and even less of the cause. Look at this egregiously thin nut graf.

These gloves don't cause neuromuscular incapacitation the way that a taser does. In fact, they only work when applied directly to bare skin.

These aren't made for apprehending anyone. These have one and only one use: causing extreme pain to already-restrained captives.

In plain language: torture.
Zero surprise that these are explicitly designed to cause pain without leaving a mark, not to incapacitate.

Yes, we're spending $20M to buy ICE agents torture devices.

As much as is wrong with the region, it has a deep magic to it too. A feeling of being protected by and connected to something much bigger and mystical and more beautiful than I feel anywhere else, but with a dark side too. And a sense of thin places.
personally I love the ‘Appalachians are older than bones’ discourse that we get into every couple months. It’s probably one of my favourite discourses. people learning in real time what ‘the old gods’ actually means
