#Opinion The notion of closing down even a small section of a street to cars has been treated by Toronto city hall with the same skepticism as a plan to explore deep space — every possible hypothetical needs to be considered and thoroughly prepared for.

New from @graphicmatt.com
Matt Elliott: Other cities close streets to cars all the time. So why does Toronto get tripped up by the idea of a pedestrian street?
Creating a bit of long-term dedicated space for pedestrians in Toronto is not something that should require years of study.

RECORD YEAR: 2025 was the biggest year ever for renewables. A record 692 GW was added, mostly solar.

More importantly, non-fossil sources generated 43% of the world's electricity and fossil generation fell.

Love to see examples like this of what’s possible and working well for cities. Prerequisite: some political courage.
Brussels has long carried a reputation as one of Europe’s most congested metropolises: a city of traffic jams, polluted air, and streets dominated by cars. Yet in recent years, the Belgian capital has become an unlikely case study in how bold political leadership can reclaim urban space for people.🧵
