Scoop: For nearly a year, NSF has struggled to make new grants. Now we know that it will not catch up.

In fact, NSF will award just 6,100 new grants—a 30% y/o/y decline, itself down from a previous avg. of 11,000+. In fact, the last time NSF awarded so few grants was in the early '80s.

So excited to share that one of the chapters from my thesis has been published! In it we discovered that, despite previous assumptions, Escovopsis (a mycoparasite in the fungus growing ant symbiosis), has a complete MAT locus under purifying selection.
@soleilsolay.bsky.social et al. find that Escovopsis s.l. - specialized fungal parasite of the fungus-growing ant symbiosis - likely undergoes cryptic sex as all examined strains have a complete mating-type locus under purifying selection.

Just had an NSF proposal rejected after almost a year pending. One of the reviewers tanked it by not seeing that we had clear documentation for the things they asked for (and that the other reviewers clearly saw). Didn't go to panel though because the NSF is being destroyed.
