There is a bleak sort of pleasure in telling people who bring up AI in casual conversation, “Actually, I’m one of the authors AI stole from. Not an exaggeration. The judge ordered them to send me a check.” It hits them different when it’s a real person saying it.

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

there was streaming before the big companies, and they criminalized it when it was free because it was unfair to artists, and now that it's for-profit it's legal and it's still fucking unfair to artists.

Obviously never, ever trust nostalgia, but seriously you'd just find a website that'd take you to an IRC channel or an email chain of people who had your weird niche obsession and no strangers every came up to and started trying to mount a reasonable-sounding defence of eugenics.
we fucking loved it, even when there was basically nothing on it, and let me tell you something else: we loved it because of human connection, human diversity, human creativity. WE DON'T NEED A SINGLE THING ANY OF THESE COMEMIERDAS HAVE MADE AND TRIED TO SELL US IN ORDER TO HAVE A GREAT INTERNET.
i especially love all the dopes saying “when the internet first went mainstream everyone hated it too” like it happened in the pioneer days so no one can dispute it, like mf’ers we were THERE

Yes, computers do everything at our company but don't worry, there's always a human reviewer. Nothing goes out the door without one of our highly trained shruggers briefly glancing at it and clicking Approve

Let’s be very clear: there is value in automating tedious and repetitive and dangerous tasks; there is value in delegating certain work to our machines that can do the work tirelessly and much faster.

This!

Which tells me, personally, that if they truly believe that its OK to make a sentient being that they enslave, well, they probably think it's ok to do that to humans.
What I don't get with the whole "AI is sentient" slop that they're trying to sell us is--surely if AI were sentient, it would be a living being and as such humans wouldn't be allowed to exploit AI with no pay, no rest and no workers rights?

i dislike the whole project but his paintings have always overwhelmingly struck me as NAIVE in a way that he doesnt seem to intend-- he's treating the illo as lowbrow and authorless and making a joke of putting it into Fine Art, but all i can see is man this fucker had no grasp of drawing at all lol
I'd never seen this Roy Lichtenstein painting before, but it's incredible how he manages unfailingly to make his copies worse than the original comics he's ripping off.

History is written by the victors. Thatcher broke the power of trade unions by mass unemployment, industrial restructuring, frittered away N Sea Oil, laid the foundations for the current housing crisis, decimated local bus services, hollowed out local government and introduced the poll tax.
