@iwriteok.bsky.social I kind of just described you as something like “Hank Green, but for history” and I hope you don’t mind.

What’s funny is, when the phrase “information wants to be free,” it *was* true. The model for the early Internet was biology: “thought is a virus” was an influential idea, and life finds a way.

But capitalism has crushed that idea. Now, information wants to be monetized.

Hey, friends,

If this weekend's election is Saxony-Alhalt is the first time you've ever paid any attention to an election in Germany, and it has you worried, I've got you.

I've been following German politics for most of my life (started in the 1980s). Just ask, I'm happy to explain the AfD.

According to the FT, Orr is acting as a live-in-landlord-cum-cult-leader to Cambridge students including those under his own supervision, whilst receiving formal complaints about his behaviour, and boasting publicly how the university is a recruiting ground for the party he might be doing crime for

Damn, there isn't any music in this world that gets my mood up like a chaconne.

(Tonight is date night, and we're watching a Baroque music concert, which just went into a chaconne, and damn, that combination of rhythm and melody is just unparalleled.)

Kind of funny that belief in free markets can't survive in a free marketplace of ideas, but there you have it.

This is a really good read. All my comrades should read it, because Moxon does a really great job of framing it. And then all my comrades should send it to the Evelyns and boomer moms in their lives.
Calls to abolish our carceral state are dangerous and unrealistic? OK, let’s talk about our carceral state. ICE has a quota of 2,000 arrests a day. Over a year, that maths out to 0.2% of the entire U.S. population.

The attempt by transphobes to proclaim their position as 'biological reality' was always a grim mirror of the "race realist" position. The Idea that social relations are sharply overdetermined by biology acts as a blank cheque for discrimination and persecution. TERFs are showing their true colours.

According to the right, if you teach that racism is an actual problem that needs to be studied and addressed, that is a bad thing.

But if you teach that racism is an actual *solution* that needs to be taught and encouraged, well, that is a good thing, a very good thing indeed.

It’s remarkable how much of 2026 politics can be fairly reduced to the interests of Southern plantation owners. Not all of it, not by a damn stretch.

But the entire DLC movement was founded to oppose “the Left” (workers owning the means of production) and “Black folks wanting rights.” Explicitly.

And again: academics are likely more vulnerable, bc they convince themselves they are less.
