DYK... "Bookplates” are labels that identify who a book belongs—or belonged—to? 🔖

They often read “ex libris”—Latin for “from the library of”—followed by the owner’s name, usually pasted just inside its front cover.

Researchers use bookplates to help reconstruct the history of a book’s ownership.

Did you catch Christopher Nolan’s "The Odyssey" this week? 🍿

Stop by the Posner Center next to see some rare copies of Homer’s epic up close.

Alexander Pope’s 1725 translation, rendered in rhymed iambic pentameter, became the definitive English version during the Enlightenment. This four-volume edition published in 1771 also includes Pope’s translation of an Iliad parody called Batrachomyomachia — or “the battle of the frogs and the mice.” (POSNER-SML PA4025 .A5 P6 1771). A 1901 printing of William Morris’ translation. This posthumous edition was printed by Chiswick Press, mimicking the elegant style and “Golden Type” of Morris’ own Kelmscott Press. The Posner Center houses a collection of about 100 Kelmscott volumes, which launched the fine press movement. (SPEC-KLM-4 PA4025 .A5 M6 1901). A miniature version of the Odyssey printed in clear 41⁄2-point Greek type. One of 23 volumes in William Pickering’s early-career “Diamond Classics” box set, it stands alongside Dante, Shakespeare, and Horace, each printed in their original language. Pickering was known as a pioneer in commercially binding books in cloth — making these some of the first ever clothbounds. (POSNER-MCS Z233 .P5 D54). A miniature version of the Odyssey printed in clear 41⁄2-point Greek type. Arts and Humanities Librarian Kristin Heath has led "Breathe, Reset, Connect with Your Heart" 🫶 workshops since Fall 2024, connecting with folks across @cmu.edu.

What began as a workshop series has since evolved into a monthly virtual program.
