So on the one hand Auckland Council pays the living wage and encourages contractors to do so, but is comfortable with this travesty!
Auckland drivers who work for Waste Management go from job security, guaranteed hours, minimum wage protections, holidays, KiwiSaver contributions, a union and the right to bargain collectively... to contractors with no job protection or work rights and massive financial debt to the company. #nzpol

There's a reason one of the first things Elon Musk's DOGE did was slash archives funding and staff.

In NZ's case, I'm not going to attribute to malice what can be attributed to short-sighted cost-cutting and managerialism, but the end result is the same: less transparent, accountable government.
