Great news! Some of us have been waiting a long time for major funders to not just shovel $ into the maws of the big publishers, and instead support the long tail of scholar-controlled journals that are run on a shoestring
We're delighted to share news in the attached press release that the Open Journals Collective has received a major award of $711,900 from the Gates Foundation to grow support infrastructure for community-governed journals!

I have always believed that ideas from basic systems neuroscience could eventually help people. But for years that felt more like hope than reality.

But look! This is one of the most personally satisfying papers my lab has produced because we’re getting there. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

AI produces MORE editorial labor, not less.

“[To weed out slop] the journal doubled its deputy editors from 6 to 11 & nearly doubled its sr editors from roughly 30 to 60. All of this is volunteer labor, unpaid academics donating time to maintain scientific quality.“ www.forbes.com/sites/johndr...
AI Slop Is Flooding Academic Journals. A Top Journal Measured It
A top management journal measured AI’s impact on submissions and reviews. Submissions rose 42%, writing quality declined and AI reviews proved uninformative to editors.

I'd be interested in a decent analysis of what is driving this increase, but I suspect a decent proportion of it is driven by increased use of LLMs. If it is, please just stop. I get we are all under pressure but at some point we have to take a step back and ask what we're doing all this for
Since ChatGPT came online in late 2022, grant application numbers across 12 UK and EU funding bodies have increased by *57%*.

For MSCA fellowships the number is *+142%*.

I do believe that what we’re doing is insane and that we need to stop doing it IMMEDIATELY.

But this paper reveals the devastating harm to society in terms of health, mortality and economic costs linked to widespread misinformation:
"Misinformation was estimated to contribute to nearly 2.3 million cases & 66 000 hospitalizations in 2021. Misinformation resulted in $2 billion in extra costs of hospitalization & 45 000 avertable deaths."

I always assumed that brain function had to line up with cytoarchitectonics.

It turns out I was wrong.

Human cortex, especially PFC, is tiled by chains of functional patches that subdivide and interlink architectonic areas into parallel processing streams.
