A new report from the BTO has revealed encouraging signs for several of the UK's breeding songbirds, following a notably successful nesting season in 2025:

Our next Indoor Meeting will be on Thursday 12th February at the Northern Rugby Club, McCracken Park, Gosforth. County Recorder Tim Dean will be speaking and explaining why he rates Colombia as his best ever foreign birding destination. Doors open 18:45 for a 19:15 start. Non members welcome.

We took our Indoor Meeting programme ‘on the road’ last night with a visit to Morpeth GC and were entertained by Tom Cadwallender presenting the birds of his Alnmouth patch of 36 years to a full house.
Club Chairman Martin Davison was very happy with 3 owl species on his return journey west!

Next Thursday our final Indoor Meeting of 2025 will be a one off at Morpeth Golf Club and will be a lively pre-Xmas affair with a talk from the legendary Tom Cadwallender on ‘Birds of Greater Alnmouth’. All welcome!

An engaging start to our Indoor Meeting Programme last week! Our guest speaker Javier Caletrio (@birdingclimate.sky.social) delivered a detailed talk on Low Carbon Birding and what it means for us as individual birders. There was some lively post-talk discussion.

Spring is here, look out for Northern Wheatears and Sand Martins and listen for singing Chiffchaffs in parks and woodland anywhere. All three are March migrants and are arriving now!

A couple of colour ringed Rock Pipits on the beach at Low Newton today, green CK and green CP, both part of the Low Newton Rock Pipit Project. These are returning birds that winter here, both were ringed as littoralis in spring 2023. Last 2 pics are of green CP taken on 24th March 2023.

Looking back 50 years ago today Northumberland had a roost of over 100 Corn Buntings at Bamburgh. Sadly lost as a breeding species around the turn of the millennium records of the 'fat bird of the barley' are extremely rare in our county today. #ukbirding
