This is also an excellent reminder to all my fic writer friends: it's not about skill or lack thereof, because so much of what gets "big" in fandom is a matter of luck. Getting that one crucial retweet or shoutout can make all the difference. And there's not a whole lot you can do about it.
I am 90% sure my career wouldn't have happened if a couple people hadn't retweeted one of my stories the exact minute they did.
You work your hardest, but it's not in your hands. It breaks a lot of people.

My biggest frustration with writing is that quite often, the SWOOP that takes a book from midlist to BIG DEAL is pure luck, and I personally can't do anything to make it happen. Publishing is not a meritocracy. It's skill + time + luck, and all you can do is be in position for possible liftoff.

I like this, it rings true to me
I appreciate when calmer heads can prevail during a time of turbulence in our fandom. This post does an amazing job of talking through everything that's happening right now. ALL of us are in different places and spaces in how we're reacting to or dealing with it, and that's okay.
