As someone who studies railroads in the Gilded Age, I think this is the big distinction that a lot of comparisons between that period and our current Big Tech boom miss. The public wanted railroads to be used for social advancement in a way that most AI technologies don't seem to be bringing.
Yes. Absolutely. Antitrust would work if we just used it.

BUT.

The "AI" industry will NOT leave behind useful infrastructure the way railroad monopolies did. Most of the data centres will never be built, and all of the active GPUs will not even be worth selling off.
