Dear Black People of #BlackSky, it would be really cool if more of you tapped into our ragtag indie Afrikan Publication @aminasi.net that puts the writings and words of Africans across the diaspora and on the continent out there.

We got Fiction and emails nowww 🤭💕

A new reader reached out from #BlackSky to ask about our banner that we first grabbed at the start 4 months back from the Solar Seed Library (see: storyseedlibrary.org/art/the-lemo...).

The reader asked why an Afrikan publication for and by Black Afrikans had it's image by a white artist.

Our statement on the UK gov't's demand that all content on all devices sold or used in the UK be scanned, on the presumption of nudity, using a dystopian combination of age verification & content scanning. This proposal will not safeguard children. It endangers us all.

All Protocol Observed

Welcome to Issue 242 of The Continent.

The conventional explanation for South Africa’s recurring waves of xenophobic violence is now familiar: a stagnant economy, high unemployment, and migrants cast as convenient scapegoats. But that’s not the whole story.

bit.ly/242_TC
This is the cover of Issue 242 of The Continent. It shows a large crowd of protesters occupying a city street in South Africa. The headline reads: “South Africa: The hidden calculus of xenophobia.” In the foreground, dozens of people crouch or kneel on the road, shouting and gesturing towards the camera. Some hold sticks, while others raise clenched fists or point upwards. A man in a bright red jacket stands out near the centre, holding a mobile phone aloft. The crowd appears predominantly male, dressed in winter clothing such as beanies, hooded tops and jackets. Behind them, hundreds more people fill the street, stretching into the distance. The atmosphere is tense and confrontational. The sky is grey and overcast, and the background is softened by haze. Tall apartment buildings line one side of the road, while trees and utility poles run along the other. Image credit: Wikus de Wet/AFP A stylised illustration on a beige background with the large headline: “Reading is resistance.” Below the text is a stack of colourful books arranged like a small structure. Inside the “frame” of the books, a person with short pink hair reclines comfortably while reading a newspaper, one leg stretched upward against the books. The figure is drawn in a simple, graphic style with bold outlines and muted colours. At the bottom, there’s text inviting people to subscribe to The Continent for free via WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, or email, followed by the publication’s name.

Fresh visuals for my viewing pleasure and now for yours. 🖤

I love self-portraits for how they reflect back what’s going on with how I’m seeing myself.

I’ll likely have my website updated sometime around Gemini season. maybe.

I have some fun stuff in mind that I’ll share soon.
a stylized digital self-portrait of me wearing sage green headphones, a denim blue sweatshirt, white frames, and smoking a spliff in front of my chartreuse laptop. Smoke floats off the canvas. “AR” is my signature in the corner. The background is navy blue with a muted powder blue grid print. A stylized digital self-portrait of me sitting down, wearing colorful wide-legged pants and a black graphic tee, smoking a spliff. Smoke floats off the canvas in three directions. “AR” in white is my signature in the corner. A stylized digital self-portrait of me wearing a navy blue sweatshirt, adorned in gold piercings, slurping ramen noodles from a black and red cup, with an expression satisfaction. Red steam drifts off the canvas. “AR” is my signature in white in the corner. A stylized digital self-portrait of me smiling, gap-toothed, holding a spliff in my hand in between my fingers making the peace sign. Smoke drifts off the canvas. The background is navy blue and neon aqua. “AR” in white is my signature in the corner.
