If we all went blind and spoke and understood only Swahili the @nytimes.com would not be any less suited to report on the moment
Trump is a bigoted fascist operating at a third-grade reading level whose policies are completely incoherent. He believes in absolutely nothing but attention, wealth and power.

the closest the NYT can get to explaining this to readers is to proclaim "this isn't your grandpa's republican party"

Just want to lay it out here that the "Harambe meme" stuff was kept alive entirely by white supremacists who thought a Swahili name sounded funny and eagerly latched onto any opportunity to use a gorilla to make allusions to Black people

hell, it can barely handle Swahili! the most spoken language on the continent!

In Swahili, it's shaghalabaghala. It's the very best word ever in any language imo.
I think everyone should get to know the west African term “wahala”.

It generally means “chaos”, “confusion”, or “drama”. A clusterfuck.

I’ve been on a mission for years to use it more regularly in my work.

Because—- *gestures at everything*

See wahala?!???

Disney is a cultural menace. This is the same company that trademarked the Swahili phrase "Hakuna Matata". A trademark that's still in effect today.
I need people who are shocked by the changes to the live-action Lilo and Stitch to research Disney’s resorts in Hawai’i as well as the actual meaning of Ohana.

It doesn’t just mean family, as in relatives. It’s about the relationship Native Hawai’ians have with each other and the land!

When Vasco da Gama first reached the Swahili coast in 1498, he was astounded to find well-developed urban centres with buildings of “stone and mortar, with windows and terraces like those of Spain.”

"SHAGALABAGALA"

means

"CHAOS AS USUAL"

In other words, SHAGALABAGALA is the Swahili version of "SNAFU," "FUBAR," & "Same Shit, Different Day" -

And my life has just become THAT MUCH RICHER.

The two official languages of Kenya are Swahili and English. Racism always goes hand and hand with stupidity.
Anna Paulina Luna: “You don’t go up to someone who’s Black and start speaking like Kenyan to them. Do you know what I’m saying?

So why would you automatically go up to someone who’s born in the United States and start speaking Spanish as if they’re too stupid…”
