Slate published an op-ed by Hanna Stotland about the Cornell rape case.

Stotland is a consultant who has built her career on rehabilitating reputations of students found responsible for SA in Title IX cases, helping them transfer to new schools. She’s a rapist re-homer.

Fuck Slate.

Every Republican voter voted for this
"Among the first to appear before the judge was Angel, a 13-year-old. He had no attorney. “Would you like to request voluntary departure, or should I issue a removal order?” the judge asked “I don’t know,” Angel said, bursting into tears: “I have no one. I have nothing.”

Every decade or so, we go through this. Waves & waves of women sharing their stories of sexual assault & harassment after an especially horrific case hits the headlines, such as the Cornell 7. And every decade or so, what changes besides collective retraumatisation? open.substack.com/pub/feminist...

The mind that boggles at this phenomenon—the inevitable result of putting violent xenophobic assholes in power and letting them run amok—is probably reeling at all sorts of basic cause and effect situations.
Visitors to the US are on track to drop by almost two million year-on-year.

“We’re the only major country in the world losing visitation,” the head of the US Travel Association said. “It’s mind-boggling.”

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and Canada has a lot of work to do.

In some ways, we’re actually backsliding right now -- from residential school denial to rights-busting "national building projects."

We gotta do a better job of defending and respecting Indigenous rights:

Several people are mad about this so I will briefly clarify!

No, I’m not saying a novel is comparable to a real-life assault in any way.

No, I’m not saying the author is bad or responsible for bad things.

I am saying I’ve seen real bad stuff come from “consensual” student-faculty relationships.
I'm thinking about this partly because of the Cornell news but also partly because of The Love Hypothesis, which is being pitched as a cute romance but is personally horrifying to read / watch as a woman in STEM. (I know the author is also a woman in STEM and honestly I don't get that at all.)

A truly heinous man has doxxed the Cornell victim on X and the comments are predictably vile. Based on countless interviews I’ve done with survivors, the trauma they are subjected to for coming forward is oftentimes even worse than the initial trauma they experienced. There is no real justice system

The way I absolutely *hate* that I have to tell students I am a mandatory reporter when this happens. I understand why I have to disclose this, but it breaks my heart.
I had avoided learning too much about the Cornell case but finally read Kate Manne's piece. I haven't taught in a college classroom in eight years but it all came back so vividly. So many women asking if they could close the door, they wanted to tell me something.

The Heritage Foundation laid out how they were going to rescind Title IX, the law that prohibits sex discrimination in education, by first targeting trans people's participation in sport. Capitulating on the human rights of transgender people is catastrophically falling at the first hurdle.
a lot of people act like there's a trade being offered where we give up trans athletes in sports and in exchange fascism is defeated forever

In 2014, I interviewed a Columbia University student who went from class to class carrying the mattress she was raped on—a protest performance piece to remind college administrators what they put on her shoulders.

Twelve years later, we still expect women on college campuses to carry that weight.
