Postdoc at the CSSB Hamburg, studying mycobacterial secretion with #CryoEM and #CryoET. Generally something of a nerd. He/him.

Quinone-transporting filaments expand bioenergetic capacity in Gram-positive Bacillota
Nature Microbiology, Published online: 17 August 2026; doi:10.1038/s41564-026-02450-zBacillus subtilis Ncp and NADH dehydrogenase form tube-like filaments with phospholipid-lined chambers that associate with quinones, which can expand bioenergetic capacity and support respiratory electron transfer.

This is just ridiculously impressive
(3/4) The video shows NPCs in a neuron within an expanded volume of ~6.37×4.33×0.2mm (≈25×17µm×0.8 µm PreExM). This was acquired with a 10x air objective but individual NPCs are still visible 😁

At the end we show a particle-averaged reconstruction from ~20 NPCs, with a resolution of ~35 Å!

Me two months ago: the flight to Heathrow is at a more convenient time and if the flight to Stansted is delayed I might miss the last train.

Me today: flight to Heathrow delayed 2 h, baggage claim delayed 40 min so I miss the midnight bus, currently waiting for the 2 am bus which is 30 min late 🤷‍♂️

PLEASE SHARE! New job openings in my lab @zmbp-tuebingen.bsky.social. We have a broad interest into the mechanistic basis of how molecular complexes are rewired during cellular development in plants and during invasion by pathogens.

Bad enough my incoming bachelor's student was born in 2003, this is unacceptable 👴
As of today, the release of Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring happened closer to the original US release of Star Wars than to today.

Yes, you are old.

Love it when I have 15 minutes left at the end of the day to tick something off tomorrow's to do list.

Of course, there are several things on today's list that I didn't even start, but I did see a heron.

Sharing this here on Bluesky as well. The fact that institutions refuse/can't afford to fund proper staffing of a cutting-edge research facility is frankly insane, but I also don't think we're alone in this. #cryoem #cryoet 🧬🧶🧪 @cssbhamburg.bsky.social

On the plus side, Trump single-handedly justifying the contemporary relevance of my planned research for the next decade is going to be a big help in me getting a permanent position, right?

*with a smaller voice* ...right?
After a day of immersing myself in documents on 17th c. French commerce in the Ottoman Empire – especially on duties on shipping, and all the intricate ripple effects that arose from these across the Mediterranean – seeing Trump whack a 20% duty on Hormuz cargo is making my brain explode 🤯 🗃️

Some bacteria do not live as individuals. They build multicellular filaments and connect neighboring cells through tiny cell-cell junctions.

Cyanobacteria are among the most beautiful examples 😍 In our new paper, we reveal first molecuar insights on the cyanobacterial septal junction architecture 🧵

Latest work from the Marlovits lab. Congrats to former postdoc Biao and all the other authors!
An evolutionarily conserved, short linear actin filament-binding motif (SFM), present in >100 proteins.

Great collaboration with the Windhorst and Marlovits labs. Happy to have contributed, by using macrophage podosomes as a readout.
