With all the people migrating from X to Bluesky now (I got 30 notifications of people following me today that I recognise from Twitter), now is a good time for a reintroduction.
This thread is here to announce my #DyspraxiaAwarenessWeek plans, which are 100% free and virtual.

Both really lean into my dual-citizen identity, since one is a British event and the other is a Canadian one. More details are below if you want to learn more about #Dyspraxia👇

My book "Stumbling Through Space and Time: Living Life With #Dyspraxia" turned 4 on September 21.

So I thought now was a good time to reflect on the writing process I had when I first started writing this book.
Stumbling Through Space and Time: Sharing your lived experience in memoir
Writing my first memoir meant figuring out which parts of my life were worth sharing. Old diaries, family memories, childhood documents, editing, professional guidance and other people's perspectives all helped me work out what belonged in Stumbling Through Space and Time.

Author friends: The scam emails directed at us, making lofty promises, are on the rise. AI is making spam too easy. 1 of my #Neurodivergent powers is a great bullshit detector, so I didn't fall for it. But I wanted to write this thread to protect people from harm:

How I deal with a sudden build-up of calls as a #Neurodivergent freelancer: Carefully plan my time so that I am not doing any more than I can realistically handle in any given day. How do I know my actual limit? Life experience...basically.

The wait is...so long from one step to the next in the process. That really took some getting used to, as someone used to freelance writing & consulting work with fast turnaround times & client expectations that would have been addressed yesterday in a perfect world. But it is worth it!

Dolly Parton: wow, haven’t seen a sad loss in music this big since David Bowie. Like to remember her as the fiery presence in 9-to 5 and the active voice in the charity space who did some real good in this world.

Classic social media putting anger fuelled social media front and centre, but now that I am done being angry, I would love to hear from the #Neurodivergent community what neurodivergent perspectives are the most worth paying attention to? Because honestly, that's much more worth everyone's time.
The hard part of being any form of #Neurodivergent is that you spend so much of your life being stigmatised for being too neurodivergent by someone else's standards while being not neurodivergent enough for reasonable adjustments to be taken seriously...also based on someone else's standards.

If I were given a penny for every time my #Neurodivergent peers said, "I was told I can't be ND because I am smart, successful, social & I am living an independent life," I would be a freaking wealthy woman. But come to think of it, people have said that about me too.
I have a PhD and was turned away from ADHD appraisal because I was "too smart to have a learning disorder" (NHS circa. 2022). Oppinions like that might screw the data somewhat (also anyone who thinks academia isn't full of neurodivergent people have never talked to an academic).

Despite writing for a living, I am #Neurodivergent & I learned to read + write at a slower pace than my peers when I was a kid. So whatever medium makes it possible for people to read & write counts; audio, text-to-speech, dictation software, along with print/ e-books are all equal to me.
Literally my only issue is the semantics of 'reading' being a visual activity, while an audiobook is aural. Both are equally valid and I'm ecstatic that audiobooks have made books more accessible, I truly am. I know this is being pedantic, but it's a neurodivergent pet peeve of mine.
Yup. This is where I note to people that the "books vs audiobooks" debate is a nonissue for the vast majority of authors, we're delighted you come to our work whatever the format. Also audiobooks opened up a whole new revenue stream for us, which we also, you know, tend to like.

Getting my first traditional publishing deal didn’t happen by accident. I pitched my manuscript for a year straight, a total of 90 different times. I worked with a mentor on my manuscript, asked other authors for advice and I studied industry standard querying tactics like it was my freaking PHD.

Having anti-discrimination laws, special education, and support programs for #disabled working people is one thing, but where that all falls apart is when people are unable to access a diagnosis, relevant forms of support, or speak up about their support needs.
