This is a good film. I'll be speaking with the director after the 9.20 screening. However, it is screening from 9/18 to 9/24. I've been talking about this case for a long time because it remains relevant today.
Free Joan Little tells the story of the groundbreaking 1975 case of the first woman in US history to be acquitted for using deadly force to resist sexual assault.

NYC, Sun, Sep 20, 2:30pm: Q&A w/IC cofounder Mariame Kaba & the director.

"If you're baffled as to why they're murdering health workers in Gaza, it's because they are the people who will testify in court as to what has been done. They are killing the witnesses.

Gave some comments for this story in @science.org about a study in JAMA that shows a devastating decrease in NIH fellowships awarded to Black and Hispanic scientists.

A lot of early career people
are having their future meddled with. Some groups unequally...

All of this!

AND especially this:
The problem is not “medical mistrust”; it’s “institutional untrustworthiness.”

If you’re someone who thinks about the health system and are striving towards justice in health and care, go give this a read!
In my new op-ed for @ms.now, I write about why the problem isn’t “medical mistrust.”

It’s institutional untrustworthiness.

From a 1960s NIH vaccine study involving Black infants to the Find A Black Doctor lawsuit, I explore why care where we feel seen is self-advocacy.

Ugh among all the reasons I hate Elon Musk one is *purely* because the Nazi acquisition of Twitter meant I could no longer enjoy Black Twitter livetweeting the spelling bee for moments like this!

I hate everything about this timeline.
NEW: Babies Are Bleeding to Death as Parents Reject a Vitamin Shot Given at Birth

The vitamin K shot, a lifesaving injection given to newborns to prevent uncontrollable bleeding of the brain and intestines, has become collateral damage of the anti-vaccine movement.

“On average, these hospitals paid $15.7 million (SD, $46.1 million) for management consulting services, with each contract costing an average of $6.2 million (SD, $14.8 million). Management consulting contracts lasted an average of 1.4 years”

Surely this is more useful than more staffing!
jama.com JAMA @jama.com · May 4
US nonprofit hospitals spent $7.8 billion on management consultants from 2009 to 2023, but contracts were not associated with meaningful changes in finance, operations, or quality of care.

I was recently at an event where the speaker used the microphone, but the volume on the system was set such that only the front half of the audience could hear them clearly... I could barely hear anything, and it felt like a waste of time to attend!
As someone who lost hearing in one ear for about a year and now has poor in that ear, I super appreciate anyone who uses a microphone.
Conference friends:

My voice is very loud. Almost certainly louder than yours.

I always use the microphone during a conference presentation so that everyone can clearly hear me. And you should too.

My best friend died an eminently preventable death after being ignored by doctors and nurses and accused of being a "seeker" (they had security toss her bags and throw out her medications). Turned out she had a pulmonary embolism.
