Thrilled to have my first thesis chapter published in @currentbiology.bsky.social!

We combine genomics, gene editing, and performance experiments to reveal the genetic basis and functional consequences of hurricane-induced trait shifts in island lizards!

Check it out:

Genomic targets of hurricane-induced selection on clinging performance in an island lizard
Vaughn et al. show that hurricanes drive parallel genomic selection signatures in island anoles. One candidate locus (hs6st1) is associated with rear toe length. CRISPR disruption reduces hindfoot ele...

This is the key. Thinking up new ideas is never the bottleneck - it's all the institutional slow downs: Grants take years, purchasing approvals, sponsored projects office need so many docs & let's not forget how long it takes our animals to breed.

AI doesn't solve the most important bottlenecks
Everyone says AI will accelerate science. I don't think it will -- at least not in biology, and at least not soon.

New post where I explain why, and how the productivity paradox can be resolved:

Why AI will not speed up science (yet)
You can see AI everywhere except in the productivity statistics

Entered a Claude Science/Code hackathon last minute and snagged 3rd place for a pigmentation gene network project.

And I have some thoughts on the whole “is AI replacing scientists or is it slop?”-dichotomy

AI makes me feel like Timmy Turner
What a week of scientific recon with Claude Science taught me about the vast space between autonomous robot scientists and science slop

First major paper from the lab! The work was led by super talented postdoc Maria Akopyan. She explored how reference bias skews estimates of diversity, demography, divergence & recombination rate with help from @elliecat.bsky.social
& awesome ungrad Matthew. Full thread coming soon 🤓
