Since my father's death, I've been thinking about grief as a profound energy source-- of clarity, discipline, and commitment.

With romantic weddings, we make promises to love our spouse. We should also normalize making vows to honor those who have left.

With grief comes a ruthless clarity on what matters. And a chance to commit new love vows.

I’m looking forward to continuing my streak since last January of going to my local liquor store and not even looking in the direction of the neighboring Target.
We spoke to Black women who started the Target boycott & who sustained it for a yr+. They'll likely never go back.

Teacher Laverne Mickens put it like this: “[Black women] will say if & when it’s over. And I can tell you right now: That will be the 15th of never ever.”

For many Black women, the Target boycott is not over. It may never be.
A faith leader announced the end of a yearlong “Target fast,” but many Black women who helped launch the boycott say the movement wasn’t his to call off.

I’m told my great-grandfather fled to America as a fugutive from justice because he shot a man’s ear off.
Genuinely curious: If your family is American, what brought them here?

I live in Silver Spring, am from northern PA, and spend a lot of time in the winter in western New York, and I can honestly say this is the absolute hardest time I have ever had shoveling. This “snowcrete” is diabolical.
I had not heard the term 'snowcrete' before this week in DC.

But talk about the perfect description of heavy snow, followed by even heavier sleet, followed by Arctic cold.

Have seen blizzards before, but nothing like this frozen-white-tomb effect.

DC buses are meeting the moment!

The U.S. has successfully convinced its people that “the humanities are frivolous and STEM is Important and Real” is basically a law of nature: this is absolute nonsense that we should stop putting up with.

People have been trying (understandably) to dunk on the FDA about this, but I think there's real progress in their acceptance of Bayesian stats. When I wrote about pediatric COVID vaccines in 2022 the FDA was still requiring frequentist methods, delaying the approval.

rare to see an american politician speak in these terms and it rocks
“When I speak about making our city more affordable, my vision is not limited to the homes that we live in or the child care that we’re making universal — it’s also a vision where we make it possible for working people to afford lives of joy, of art, of rest, of expression.”

I’m re-opening the airing of grievances to mention the couple that sat next to us at a restaurant last Saturday and brought their young daughter who was in the middle of a florid upper respiratory infection. My family and I are now the sickest we’ve been in months. I hope the cacio e pepe was good.
Please do not send me a Slack message consisting solely of “Hi Tony” and wait for a response. I already know you need something, it’s not impolite to include the ask in your initial message.
LET US BEGIN THE AIRING OF GRIEVANCES. HAPPY FESTIVUS TO ALL!
