Very forceful statement by Terry Tao about AI and math.

terrytao.wordpress.com/2026/09/11/a...

Note, he is not claiming the models aren't real and powerful. He's talking about how that power should be used. This, I believe, is what all AI discussions should center.
A Severe Misalignment of AI in Mathematics

I was talking with a colleague the other day who said that while he’s not sure if AI will change physics research so much as to unemploy the physicists, he’s confident that teaching will always need humans.
So we know AI helped a negligible number of students. But how many did it harm? I've crunched the raw data provided by the lead researcher, and what I've found is that ~9,500 students using AI studied less than even the *least* studious, non-AI using student.

This should shock the conscience.

I'm in this picture and I don't like it. I've regularly got hundreds of tabs open. What I really need is a way to organize the information and bookmarks just ain't it.
This is exactly one of the findings of the study* on tabbed browsing I did ~15 yrs ago — tab usage is bimodal. Funny to see that it (anecdotally at least) still holds up!

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.
