My position on taking action. And on the important space between everything and nothing.
Ha I knew he was dodgy but didn't know the details. A lifetime of lies.
The BBC have produced a clear, balanced online report. His disgrace comes from risk of bringing a libel trial (1987) but he would almost certainly have got away with it without London Mayoral candidacy of 1999-2000, leading to his false alibi being exposed & perjury

I completely missed that the Anthropocene had been Plutoed two years ago. I'm no geologist, but to me it had seemed like such a powerful insight that we're poorer without.
What became of the Anthropocene epoch? In 2024, more than a decade of evidence and serious procedural objections were met with a 2.5 page press statement. Our new commentary in Earth's Future asks for the record to be released and an independent review of the process.

I miss the stars. Sometimes I forget they were even there to miss. We have lost so much, to mourn and to win back.
I’ve become obsessed with the disappearing night sky. I miss going outside wherever I was and seeing the stars!

Glad to be able to write about this for @us.theguardian.com. Thanks to the kind readers who have already sent me emails about their own night skies.

AI doesn't need to be super intelligent to kill us all.
I'm not sure if y'all saw a CNN report on how the US had almost started WW3 with China based on fabricated information generated by a chatbot, claiming that a Chinese vessel was carrying components of nuclear weapons.

That was an "existential threat" to humanity

"We hear you. You were right. You're under arrest."

Gestures matter and I'm really glad he's saying this, but it's pretty brutally incongruous with the mass arrests of Palestine Action / @defendourjuries.bsky.social supporters outside the conference. Nice words, now do actions.

If attendance at a major women's conference was down 80% due to a boycott fighting against trans *inclusion*, it would be all over the Times, Telegraph, Mail etc.

This last weekend, attendance at a major women's conference was down 80% due to a boycott fighting against trans *exclusion*. Crickets.
The Labour Party’s women’s conference on 26/9/26 was an embarrassing farce, with only 200 delegates of the 1,000 normal attendance (no major unions) in protest of the Labour Party’s shameful abandonment of trans people following the legally absurd ruling of the Supreme Court in FWS in April 2025.

map of a genocide
Google finally updated some of its satellite images of Gaza and my god, it's horrific. The entirety of Rafah has been demolished. The majority of Khan Younis is in ruins. Entire towns completely leveled and erased of the map.

On BBC payscales it costs the same to employ ten "normal" journalists as it costs to employ one Chris Mason.

Unrelated: there's an all-staff call tomorrow for BBC Local to find out where the next round of cuts are happening.
they should study him in a lab. I don’t think I could write this badly on purpose. still, glad this has higher billing than coverage of last night’s far right escalation

Will keep boringly saying this (no disrespect to OP): it's not a health surcharge. It's not hypothecated to the NHS; you can't choose not to pay it and thereby eschew healthcare. You could equally call it an education or roads surcharge. It's using the NHS's sanctified status to rip off immigrants.
The UK government is making upwards of £4.9bn in profit from visa fees, citizenship fees & the immigration health surcharge. Meanwhile, people are getting into thousands of pounds of debt or going without food just to afford to these immigration fees.

This is correct: 18 year olds have never known a country where there was a credible belief that next year might be better than the one that preceded it, rather than it being dumber, uglier, nastier and more cruel. And that’s not a force of nature, it has been quite deliberately inflicted.

Absolutely horrifying. How can our government be planning to drill for new oil and gas when we know these are the consequences?

We have to keep the pressure on this Labour Government to keep all fossil fuels in the ground and secure a safe future for our children and grandchildren.

Replacing television and film with Whatever All This Is has gone so well. The bright future that the disrupters came up with (a version of having a very big hard drive of indifferent content you can’t navigate and don’t value) has worked about as well as it did for music. We’re all so much poorer.

Here is the thing: if this is obvious to everyone, there are a few options for what's happening.

A) they like and support the far right,

B) the Westminster court is so incestuous and self involved, and so dominated by the right wing press, that politicians don't understand this.
The maddening thing is that there is nothing but political reward in Burnham saying. We back and support the RNLI anyone who impinges on the RNLI will face the full force of the law.

Any lives lost due to this closure should be laid firmly at the feet of the far-right agitators who caused this. The way in which anti-asylum activists are putting more and more people at risk should be a wake up call that it is time to genuinely combat them, rather than pandering to their ideology.
The RNLI has said the abuse of volunteers in Portsmouth has forced it to close the lifeboat station there and stop operating since September 10. Nearby stations have been providing cover to the area instead. One of the UK's largest coastal cities without a lifeboat because of the far-right.
