We could watch back-to-back episodes of The Brady Bunch in the late afternoon or of Happy Days late at night, but just two of each, not a real binge.

Hardly the most significant of Stranger Things’ little anachronisms, but Joyce is here referring to the events of s1e1, set in November 1983. Cheers was barely through one 13-episode season, certainly wasn’t syndicated, & there weren’t other ways to watch multiple reruns (physical media, streaming).

That is an outstanding nitpick.

lol
the first ever comprehensive treatment of the issue of novelty in legal scholarship is now available:

The migrating Canada Geese seem especially noisy and numerous this year. Kinda seems like constant fleets of fighter-bombers flying south in formation to take on the enemy south of the 49th parallel.

Fight well, you evil cobra chickens. Fight well and leave lots of nasty giant crap around.

1/ The Speech or Debate Clause probably doesn't apply to the Omar search.

BUT, whenever I talk about Speech or Debate immunity and argue that it should be interpreted capaciously, the pushback I always get is that we don't want to turn members of Congress into "super-citizens".

Colin Jost's Pete Hegseth wearing a bandolier of Fireball shot bottles cracks me up.

Just FYI

Jacobin's Larry McMurtry / "MEN reading novels about MEN" article that you're all hate-trafficking was written by Ross Barkan

aka the guy who got fired by nymag for at least 67 instances of plagiarism, mere weeks ago:
Looks like Ross was Barkan up the wrong tree

here is the thread about twitter that answers your questions.
bsky.app/profile/jaco...
I am way too online for my own good, and I had an unreasonably large twitter following, and I really *enjoyed* twitter for a lot of years, and yet leaving there and never looking back was maybe the easiest what-felt-like-a-big-ethical decision I've ever made.

Had to mute the thread about twitter. If any of my actual regular conversation partners posted a reply there that you want me to see and respond to, post it here.

worked before that. Maybe only one person every couple of centuries was getting into the Good Place even before the 1490s, bc human life was always complicated and interconnected.

The big fix was a really complete rethinking of everything, not just a reweighting of the points.

The way the point system is broken gets clearly linked to the world of interconnected commerce with the tomato stuff, and I assume the date of the last person getting in actually was chosen to line up with Columbus' time. But we never really learn whether/ how well/ how badly the point system...

I stand corrected! (But still think it would make more sense in a context of advanced globalization).

True! I'd forgotten that story.

Any time I snark about Jacobin I get a dozen or two blocks immediately.

ah, guillotine.
This is a significant worsening of our current state of constitutional collapse. I know it feels like there are so many, and there are, but in terms of crossing the Rubicon moments this one's up there.
Additionally, it's an attempt to usurp the power to judge the qualifications of members of the House, which the Constitution vests solely in the House itself.

And there's no reason to assume she will be the last member of Congress he goes after like this. It's a direct attack on the legislature.
It matters that she's a member of Congress. This is an extreme escalation. He is attacking a member of the one body with the constitutional power to hold him accountable and check his crimes. And he's doing so trying to gin up a fake basis to strip her of her eligibility to be in Congress.
*Even if* there was some factual basis for that suspicion, and there is absolutely none, there is no plausible basis to think any related evidence could be at her home all these years later. And the statute of limitations would have long expired even for any theoretically possible criminal charge.
This obviously violates the longstanding DOJ policy about a lockout on taking actions against candidates in the weeks leading up to an election.
To start with, this is happening because the president has targeted a member of Congress as part of a broader explicitly racist hate campaign against Americans of a particular ethnic origin. There's no other way to put it.

-20 in Texas, -21 in Iowa, -26 Georgia obviously jump out, but I'm also struck by

+1 in Montana, Utah, Kansas
+2 in Oklahoma, Alabama, South Dakota

Trump's approval rating has turned negative in several Republican-leaning states ahead of November's midterm elections.

There will be a lot of equivocating about all the times search warrants have been executed on members of Congress for corruption investigations and the like, and it can't be stressed enough in how many ways HSI raiding Ilhan Omar is extremely not like that.
