An existential crisis can feel like losing your sense of self, purpose, or direction.

But sometimes what’s actually gone is the old map.

The territory changed.

The new map hasn’t been drawn yet.

Algorithms didn't invent economic incentives. They gave them new capabilities.

“When the Algorithm Sets the Price” goes back to the roots of AnarchyJC’s Excess & Algorithms section: take complicated economics, strip away the jargon, and ask better questions.

When the Algorithm Sets the Price
What happens when the price of something stops being a decision and becomes an optimization? There was a time when pricing was relatively simple. A store decided what to charge. A landlord decided …

Fascism is a real historical phenomenon.

“Fascist” is not supposed to mean “person I hate.”

When a historically specific political concept becomes a generalized insult, we lose some of our ability to recognize what the word was meant to describe.

Fascism Becomes Background Noise
What Happens When Everyone Becomes a Fascist? There is a word we have become remarkably comfortable using. Fascist. We use it for politicians, parties, governments, corporations, institutions, stra…

The latest campaign finance ruling is easy to debate.

The harder question is what it reveals.

Follow the money. Follow the law. Follow the incentives.

Then look at the pattern.

Economic crises rarely look the same.

Their aftermath often does.

This visual essay explores a recurring question: why do periods of instability so often end with greater concentration of wealth and power?

I'm less interested in blame than in patterns.

Sometimes the world isn't asking us to do anything.

A lake. A sunset. Trees. The sky.

Nothing to click. Nothing to optimize. Nothing to document.

Just something worth looking at.

#TBT to the first visual essay I made.

It brought together two things I’ve always loved: art and journalism.

Taking an idea, researching it, writing about it, and then figuring out how to communicate that idea visually was difficult—but it was also deeply satisfying.

New AnarchyJC visual essay:

Manufactured Outrage: The Business of Keeping Us Divided

Attention becomes perception.
Perception becomes priority.
Priority becomes power.

And the question worth asking is:

What disappeared from view while everyone was looking here?

There is a strange space between what was and what will be.

The old life is gone. The new one hasn't arrived yet.

We often mistake that uncertainty for failure.

Maybe you don't need the whole future figured out.

You just need the next piece.

Nobody has to tell you to be quiet.

Sometimes we learn what not to say because we've already calculated the cost of disagreeing.

The Courage to Dissent examines when integrity requires us to accept that cost & why responsible dissent matters to civic culture.

We usually ask: "What are my choices?"

Maybe the better question is: "Who decided these were my choices?"

This visual essay looks at how markets, politics, media, and human psychology can create the appearance of abundant choice while alternatives narrow underneath.

Not conspiracy. Incentives.

We assume other people see what we see. They don't. And neither do we.

Every mind is working with a different collection of memories, experiences, expectations, and predictions.
