… the thing I can’t get over is how the “AI “ discussion has successfully prevented any discussion of the human future

They’ve managed to shove any long term planning for what the world will look like in even five years

So how about this for a "pause AI" proposal: "pause credulous AI reporting". No more media about "breakthroughs" or "rogue agent swarms" or ... UNLESS and UNTIL that media demands the actual empirical evidence and/or focuses on the motivations of & harms by these companies.

Between the PRs of (largely likely stolen) math breakthroughs, claims of "rogue AI" (actually cybercrimes by companies, but whatevs), and doomerist "whistleblowers", it feels like we've been subjected to a gish gallop of hype recently.

Folks think disagreeing with an expert for having huge interdisciplinary gaps is terrible

.. if that expert is white

And they will allow that expert sarcasm

But god forbid a non white expert USE THEIR EXPERTISE AND SATIRE AS WELL

folks want to explain HIS WHOLE FIELD TO HIM

I'm going to sleep now & someone wake me up when LessWrong isn't being cited in the mainstream.

Wake me up when the eugenicist doomsday cult led by a self described "genius" writing fan fiction about having sex with girls to increase population "intelligence," isn't setting the "AI" narrative.

I wrote this quickly at a bus stop and didn't realize it would go viral, or else I would have worded it better. But the point is that the media is too credulous about AI killing everyone in 10 years (how?) when climate change is killing people now and will only get worse (we know exactly how).
I resigned from ExxonMobil today. I spent the last three years doing fossil fuel extraction research at both BP and ExxonMobil. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing to maximize extraction while the window to act closes, and gambling with our lives. More below.

The billionaire sex pests pushing generative AI keep spinning up badly remembered science fiction scenarios of apocalypse, as both advertisement ("we are literally creating a god... it might be too powerful!") and as a way of shifting the conversation from its actual real world harms it already does

They desperately want people talking about the danger of their dogshit extruder gaining sentience, and not the fact that it is currently actually factually poisoning Black people in the poor regions where they build data centers. Or convincing people to kill themselves, etc.

They absolutely want the conversation to be "will this become as a god and judge mankind?!" instead of "what are we doing about all the guys using it to generate CSAM?"

Advertisement, and a way of shifting the conversation from real world harms to their cocaine-fueled delusions of grandeur.

So-called rationalists have created a disturbing secular religion that looks like it addresses humanity’s deepest problems, but actually justifies pursuing the social preferences of elites.

I really think that the two biggest factors of generative AI are:

1. The fact that these guys are all rapists and pedophiles and have utter disregard for consent

2. These guys are all absolutely terrified of growing old and dying.

Just look at what they have used it for so far.

It's gonna be weird when Bezos and other billionaires are dying of cancer and start getting even more and more desperately obsessed with immortality than currently.

Like, Steve Jobs went with crystals and homeopathy but he didn't have high-octane LLM gasoline pouring delusions into his brain 24/7.

going to make the shameless plug for my book on this exact subject, where i argue that even if data centers were built more sustainably, they would still be fundamentally unsustainable when built at this scale: meaning both the hyperscale size of modern data centers, but also the number being built
HYPERSCALE is hitting bookstores on October 20. Preorder it now!

In the book, I dig into how the data center boom is pushing our planet past its breaking point, and the incredible efforts of people pushing back against the profit-driven interests of Big Tech.

The neverending complaining about identity politics, yes.

Vapid punditry.

Designed to get us habituated to betraying The Other.
A basic fact about how the right operates is that they take attacks on women's rights, trans people, immigrants and racialized people etc. deathly seriously, while many liberals and even many leftists dismiss them as 'distractions' or 'culture issues'.

Often due to tacit agreement.
The right-wing organizing around the Lindsay Clancy trial is growing and it’s frightening. A lot of people overlook these culture wars revolving around women’s issues, because, well, they’re women’s issues. But the right doesn’t. It’s how they regained such a massive cultural foothold.
