What I find so confusing about this practice of modernization is that it assumes a book is meant to be timeless, or “evergreen” as they say. Books come from a time and place, and that context is important to the text.

If only there were some sort of beloved story about the perils of using a fundamentally corrupt technology created for evil ends, even if you yourself have pure motives. Ideally one which made it clear at the end that there can be no compromise with inherent evil, it must just be stamped out.

If only there were some sort of beloved story about the perils of using a fundamentally corrupt technology created for evil ends, even if you yourself have pure motives. Ideally one which made it clear at the end that there can be no compromise with inherent evil, it must just be stamped out.
