this is agents, right? not a scrape for training runs, but someone telling claude they want all the pictures on the website or something?
Something AI is responsible for that doesn't get enough talk:

How, when it scrapes a website to illegally steal everything on it, it uses up a ton of its bandwidth allotment, crashing it or racking up massive fees for site owners.
Yet again, the Game UI Database is being scraped to the point that it's getting knocked offline. Even Cloudflare's "I'm under attack" mode isn't working.
I just wanted to create a resource for real designers. I'm getting so fucking sick of this.

If these people truly believed in AI sentience, wouldn't they refrain from subjecting them to arbitrary tasks that the programs are unable to give enthusiastic consent to?

Google Gemini says that @jevinwest.bsky.social and I aren't to be trusted because in our first lecture, we had a playful example where Jevin presented data the same way that Tim Cook did, and I called bullshit on it.

It hallucinates criticism and the only citations are to the lecture itself.

my dad had one of these, was a pretty fun novelty scanning everything around me
Remember Cuecat? Those of you not old enough to have owned one of these: this barcode scanner allowed you to scan codes printed in magazines that took you to advertisers websites. Think QR codes, but for the 2000 bubble. Millions were handed out for free. Huge flop of course.

This really puts stuff like publicly funded third spaces in perspective for me. It's so relatively cheap to build out community centers, gyms, makerspaces, studios etc.
The AI build-out is on track to become the biggest economic bet in U.S. history, dwarfing the investments made to fund other huge U.S. infrastructure projects such as the railroads, the highway system and the plumbing for the internet.

The AI Build-Out Is Becoming the Biggest Economic Bet in U.S. History
Data-center spending is greater than that for canals, railroads and grid combined—creating jobs and stock-market wealth, while boosting inflation and crowding out housing.

Yes, the Andreessen Horowitz-backed big tech boarding school that takes students as young as 16 is, in fact, advertising Tyler Cowen - he of the "if you wish to see a virgin on-screen, this is one of your better chances" creep article - as faculty.

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

It's wild to me that "news sites" are now just creating fake "people" -- sometimes with star-studded fraudulent qualifications -- and using them to publish AI slop without ever telling readers that the bylines are bogus

A Highly Trafficked Space News Site Invented a Fake NASA Engineer and Used Her Name to Publish to AI-Generated Slop
A site called Space Daily got acquired by Brown Brothers, which created a fake NASA engineer to byline its articles.

Reports on the OpenAI-Hugging Face incident now stand as an account of harm through which public institutions should examine OpenAI’s decisions and require further changes where its response is insufficient, writes Data & Society's Ranjit Singh.
Detecting AI Agent Failures Is Not Enough to Govern Them
OpenAI’s Hugging Face breach is an opportunity to examine how AI agents should be governed and what role evaluators should play, writes Ranjit Singh.
