In honor of Dolly Day, and one month without the angel herself, a poem I wrote after her passing 🤍🦋

In light of, shall we say, renewed interested in digital surveillance technology I’m very inclined to revise the first chapter of my undergraduate thesis about poetry and digital surveillance. But I’m also very lazy and busy so who knows if that’ll happen.

Also, I think often of this photo of Dolly with Keith Haring, captured by Andy Warhol in 1985.

One of my favorite Dolly songs is “Alabama Sundown,” which basically no one knows.

But when I was lonely, sad, and homesick my first year up in Cambridge, that chorus “Lord, what I’d give to see an Alabama sundown.” Whew.

Dolly was a promise that home was always there, no matter what. What a loss.

About half the “new non-fiction” shelf at my local library is currently Harvard profs and it kinda felt like being in the Barker Center

I’ve been using a TI-84 for the first time since my freshman year of college while tutoring, and it takes me so long to find anything in the menus

I got tired of waiting for the journalists at @theharvardcrimson.bsky.social to cover this (it IS summer), but this is to say that ALL the staff members in Women & Gender Studies here were laid off last week, on the top of the cutting of 5 lecturer positions in the program last year.+

I never read Of Mice and Men in school, so I decided to finally read it this morning and that was psychological torture to read already knowing the ending

In honor of Father’s day, “Pacifists Cocking Stolen Guns,” from my chapbook DADDY, I’M SORRY, I CANNOT WRITE AN ELEGY

I don’t really follow Nascar, except for loosely keeping up with Kyle Busch, who was my dad’s driver.

Huge fan—countless die cast cars, hats, shirts, a Busch plate on his always perfectly waxed car.

I feel odd, today. Might have to break out one of my dad’s shirts tomorrow.

Provocative thread. And yet. The many who use it often feel they must, they're afraid to fail, they think other people are using it, they feel compelled to perform at high levels all the time, and adults are crushing their hopes. If *all* AI vanished they'd mostly be thrilled.
college students are actively discouraged from using AI and insist on doing it anyway, because it's a shortcut to getting their work done. I am not at all convinced that if you were to eliminate it tomorrow they'd all be thrilled, even if they boo the idea of it in public

It’s been a tough day to be someone who loves Alabama so dearly so we’re clinging to the In This House sign I made before the 2024 election

When I took classes in the Hist-Lit department in college I always got praised by the professors for my close reading skills and I would quickly find out that was because Hist-Lit concentrators did not know how to close read

There are a couple magazines I swear I submitted to when I did a big batch in March that I can find zero record of submitting to?

Doing some research for a potential project I’m working on, does anyone have recommendations for good poems about (American) football? Also open to favorite sports poems(/poets?) in general but really looking for good football poems.

People will see a societal problem and then flip a coin to decide whether they think fixing it should be offloaded to public schools or libraries

People talking about William Gass as of late reminds me of my junior tutorial in college when we had color week (Bluets, On Being Blue, and Remarks on Colour) and now I sometimes misremember something written by Wittgenstein as being Nelson or Nelson as Gass, etc.
