hello im the CEO and i can’t do anything without the support of the simpering vizier that lives in the computer. in order to keep collecting an offensively meager paycheck you too must consult the vizier regularly. don’t worry he has lots of uses other than just hopefully putting you out of a job

This thread explains a lot of what I'm seeing in my work environment currently. A lot of people in IT are just going mad antropomorphizing the text extruding machine.
This really is the fundamental toxicity of this technology that just can't ever be escaped; even if it wasn't the object of economically destructive hype, even if it wasn't being overdeployed in environmentally harmful ways, etc, it's like asbestos for the brain
I was trying to get through to one of the staff of this site yesterday but like, this is psychosis. The people who run this site think AI is alive. How do you come back from this

Should probably decorate my workplace with those. Getting increasingly convinced that getting fired would be worth it by now.
Made myself some of JWZ's cards. For my sanity's sake.

Just shouting out Libro because I do love buying an audiobook and having the money go to my local indie bookstore 💖
Seeing a ton of folks wondering where to get audiobooks these days 👀 We are an audiobook company that share profits with 4,000+ indie bookshops across the globe. Every time you buy an audiobook with us—there are over 600,000 to choose from—your indie benefits. (Which we think is pretty cool.)

“Appearing Productive in The Workplace — No One's Happy”

https://nooneshappy.com/article/appearing-productive-in-the-workplace/

> The slowness was not a tax on the real work; the slowness was the real work. It was how the work got good, and how the people producing the work got good
Appearing Productive in The Workplace — No One's Happy
AI can produce work that looks expert without being expert. The failure arrives in two shapes, and both are reshaping the workplace.

The seven step “They nerfed my AI!” cycle:

1. An LLM tool is released. The company claims it’s a miracle that will change everything

2. Early adopters try it on straightforward tasks, find it seems to work, though they don’t really check it. “OMG! It’s a miracle that will change everything!”

I've been seeing people say the harms of "AI" comes from shitty people, not the tech and that the shitty people will go away after the bubble pops. While the first part is true in the strictest sense (contrary to claims, these are not autonomous systems) it's not really true in a practical sense

I know a number of authors, being one myself. Know how many of them are using AI?

Literally fucking zero. But "AI evangelists" have a vested interest in pretending otherwise because "everyone is doing it and lying about it, so YOU should definitely do it" is the only angle they've got left.
Authors are using AI. Publishers know it. And now, says publishing consultant Thad McIlroy, authors are being forced to lie about it. One cancelled horror novel didn’t just end a career—it exposed an industry-wide reckoning. https://thewalrus.ca/new-york-times-ai-generated-shy-girl-mia-ballard/

It comes down to whether you think "more of the same" is a good thing or a bad thing for software.

LLMs exaggerate and exacerbate existing market and industry dysfunctions. They've hastened media's descent into fabrications and clickbait, accelerated the devaluation of writing and illustration. And in software it has fuelled an existing crisis and exposed a divide at the core of the industry 1/n

So don't feel like you cannot be a luddite if you like technology, like working on it.

Caring about your fellow human beings' wellbeing and not some corporations bottom line makes you one. Believing that tech needs to be evaluated on what effects it has and that we have a choice makes you one.

I am a luddite and to me there is a lot of joy in technology. In technology that we deploy for all our wellbeing. Solar panels and vaccines, high-speed rail and wikipedia.

But they joy stems from the feeling of being able to be part of humanity in an embedded, meaningful way. Not from buying shit.
