Faculty are done with the idea of doing more and more stuff for students -- on top of our stated jobs -- without being paid for it.

And even if we wanted to because it's intrinsically rewarding (sure) our time is maxed out.

How do higher ed administrators not get this.

Disappointed to not see ANYTHING about moderation in this thread about a new social feature for Bluesky. That is the hardest, most important part of cultivating online communities. Anyone who's been on the social net for a few years knows this.
we have an idea for communities in the app that we're calling "spaces" — places where people can gather around shared interests or social groups.

here's a peek at some early prototypes. these are explorations, not polished or final.

looking for feedback, esp from community builders 👀
the bsky team is working on various ideas for creating smaller social spaces in the app.

which use case is most interesting to you?

1. posting into "topics" that organize public posts
2. posting into "communities" or "groups" that can be public or private
3. posting directly to your followers only

Who wants to start a Fahrenheit 451 book club? Not to read F451, but to (spoiler) divvy up human knowledge and preserve it before the billionaires destroy it all?

The internet early days literally felt like magic
I remember going on an IRC board and we were all new to it, like baby horses learning to walk

It was exciting, scary, disruptive.. all the feelings

AI is fucking boring because it's regurgitation of stolen ideas
It doesn't excite me at all

Renee Good's family filed two lawsuits today. The first, against, USG, is a standard wrongful death. The second is a Klan Act lawsuit against Jonathan Ross, AND STEPHEN MILLER and Greg Bovino. It names Nick Shirley and Christopher Rufo as non-party co-conspirators for their racist propaganda.

This week has been dense with sad news. There have been a few bright spots too, so I'm really curious to see what @jessicacalarco.com chooses for her news stitches this week!

This was one of the first things my spouse realized after we'd been dating for a few weeks and he started spending a lot of time around academics. He was so cute and naive. "I thought everyone with a PhD was really smart and put-together." Oh, sweetie, you're adorable.
Just a reminder that you can have a PhD and also be an idiot

I hate it here.

Love to my trans homies. You matter. You are worthy of love and respect. And healthcare. And human rights.

I will go down swinging with you, if it comes to that.
"You may not deadname superintelligence but you should deadname trans people" is now 100% real US policy

I couldn't sleep last night. I stayed up an extra hour or two just worrying about the Cornell victim because she was doxxed yesterday. And throughout this week I've had flashbacks to my own experiences and had to process them all over again.
Yeah this Cornell thing is like a mass disabling event for survivors. I am fine, I *was* fine. But now it's in the zeitgeist again so I get to be reminded of my own college experience, something I hadn't thought about in decades, on a daily basis.

NEW: A Texas woman died after being denied an abortion and her family sued the state and her doctors for violating her right to life. They say the ban should be struck down.

It's one of several cases challenging abortion laws under state constitutional rights to life and liberty @autonomynews.co
New Lawsuits Argue That Pregnant People Also Have a Right to Life
Lawyers are fighting abortion bans in state court by establishing that pregnant people have a right to life and liberty—or at least self-defense.

I have SO many fond memories of the drive-in in my hometown! But my favorite is visiting home during college and seeing Toy Story 3 for the first time, just me and my youngest brother. We went to the grocery store first and I bought him unlimited snacks, then we watched the movie under the stars.
Name a film you watched at a drive-in.

This thread is a wild ride. I probably would have found it unbelievable 6 years ago, but something very similar happened to me in 2021. On the way home from a friend's wedding, we were stuck in Mexico an extra night, loaded onto busses with no information. It is so scary and surreal.
lol my flight got diverted because of a medical emergency and they landed us in reykjavik in the middle of the night and deplaned us and sent us through passport control and then the crew vanished and then british airways sent us links to book an overnight hotel room but for a hotel at heathrow

over the past few weeks several AI evaluation/cybersecurity experts have explained how what's happening is a result of human incompetence rather than "AI going rogue". I'm begging the media to show a shred of journalistic integrity and stop parroting what altman or amodei say

I'm glad I read about this! My state will have a constitutional amendment on the ballot allowing the state to set limits on prop tax increases. Sounds good, right?

Analysis shows the savings will be tiny for individual homeowners but would give multi million $ breaks to large corporations. 🤬

🎯 Until they stole all that data.

This is what folks who say, "Oh, but free data exists," or "What if they paid for the data?" don't understand.

"Frontier" LLMs only works thanks to huge data which makes it virtually impossible for "AI labs" to fully remunerate data owners.

🧵
👇
Neural networks did not work UNTIL they got all that data. Raw data is useless without immense human labour to clean and store it in massive data centres. GPUs which are also required need rare earth minerals. On and on. AI only works because we're dedicating all of a massive industry to it.
You haven't bothered to watch my video, which is fine, but you'd learn none of that is recent (see slide). This idea of pretending it's new when it's always been like that is part of the problem. You have to really be more careful as you keep falling into their traps.
