So the one minister with Treasury experience is a no-go because he‘ll spook the markets, while a minister with no treasury experience, who hasn’t expressed a single idea on fiscal policy, and whose main contribution to the economy will be negative won’t be?
Sorry, this is just ridiculous.

Chris Morris is another genius. There are so many clips to choose from, but this from 1994 was way ahead of its time in terms of cultural commentary (remarkable to think there were only six episodes of The Day Today).

A good piece, but perhaps scholars and analysts who have had influence over government thinking since the early 2010s also need to engage a bit more with how discourses that shaped Brexit and the rise of Boris Johnson laid the foundations for the current Far Right turn in British politics
M'learned colleague is right here. When Blair faced weaker, but still virulent, anti-immigrant feeling in the early 2000s, there was what I call a 'this/ and' or 'address/ advocate' response. Now of course I didn't like a lot of it, but it was a better strategy. (1/2) observer.co.uk/news/opinion...

I remember the beginnings of this in the 1990s. Up until then, policy was discussed based on its effect on the world. What was it seeking to do? Would that be its effect? Then, with Andrew Marr and other gaining prominence, the discussions became more about who was up or who was down in the party 1/

I don’t want to be too shrill about this but I think the BBC, ITV and Sky have disgraced themselves in their coverage of the anti-refugee protests. A massive failure of judgement. But now we know the next time a progressive protest “isn’t news” that it’s nothing to do with numbers

Starmer doesn't seem to realise that, if you consistently accept the way your opponents frame a question, you'll find it hard to reject the answers that they give.
If you keep telling voters that Farage is right in his analysis, it will be hard to persuade them that he's wrong in his prescriptions.
