I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

Also, what oil companies are going to invest billions to extract the oil when the person guaranteeing that investment is the world's most infamous backstabber? The facilities will take years to build and at any time, Venezuela can rightfully decide to just take back what's rightfully theirs.
Very few articles mention that Venezuelan oil is so viscous that it makes sludge seem like springwater, and is full of sulphur.

It is incredibly expensive to extract it and to refine it to usefulness, and it will take billions and a decade to do it.

We are committing the dumbest theft in history.

You see a lot of glib analysts repeating the line that "Americans just don't want EVs" without taking into consideration that the US auto buying experience is dominated by a network of extremely ignorant, Republican car dealers dependent on the kind of maintenance that EVs don't need.
Having bought two EVs and a hybrid, I think a big part of America’s sloth in adopt adopting EVs is car dealerships’ management being heavily Republican, and having a business model that relies on repairs that EV‘s don’t need.

As people in uniform ask Malachi’s parents about his birth, death and the two days in between, members of the family’s church watch from folding chairs. People come and go from the bedroom; one woman cradles a sleeping toddler. In other Idaho households, his death would be investigated as a crime.
These Children’s Deaths Were Preventable. Their Parents Prayed Instead of Seeking Medical Care.
For decades, Idaho laws have allowed parents who belong to the Followers of Christ and other faith-healing sects to pray rather than seek medical care. Since 2015, at least 15 children have died of tr...

Tales of everyday corruption.

Pete Hegseth cancelled the $400,000 contract for making uniforms for the Blue Angels on the grounds that the contract with "The Sewing Box" was DEI since the firm is Black-owned.

Instead, he awarded it to a Trump donor for $1,690,000, a 325% price increase!

The overwhelming right wing sentiment is that COVID was an engineered bioweapon that was also harmless. Trump overreacted to it by shutting down the country, then engineered a drive to create a vaccine that was the real bioweapon that killed millions, and it's Joe Biden's fault.

New, from me: It is fine to disagree with aspects of the pandemic response. But what we saw at Fauci's hearing was something different: a show trial where cranks tried to threaten and shift blame to an public servant.

Here is why this is bad for all of us.🧵

It is funny that this person thinks “immigrants defended the union while native born whites sought to destroy it in the name of slavery” is an argument against immigrants being Americans. This is precisely the point, nothing about being born here makes you better bsky.app/profile/aphc...

The Trump admin had a real theory of war: Put on a show of toughness, tell people how manly you are, disdain law, do war crimes, and you win. Earlier losses came from leaders too "weak" to do that.

It was a very stupid theory. But they espoused it a lot, really seem to believe it, and acted on it.

Again, we've endured years of legacy media reporters chasing after Donald Trump supporters to find out what they want, and somehow "They want an ethnic cleansing" was never the takeaway, even though it's literally the correct answer.
The explosion of MAGA rage at birthright citizenship ruling confirms again that MAGA is really a movement for ethnic cleansing.

As we discuss on the pod, it's telling that sealed border and end to TPS/asylum don't sate MAGA. They want dramatic ethnic purges.

One thing that won't get enough attention about John Cornyn's loss to Ken Paxton is that, no matter what happens in November, Texas Republicans just willingly gave up seniority in the Senate, one of the most prized currencies in federal politics.

Let me explain what I mean...

People be talking about EVs today and that's like my whole thing so here's what I've identified as The Problem:

The idea of being inconvenienced AT ALL overrides the average person's ability to consider whether a small inconvenience in one context might be outweighed by upsides in other contexts.

1. There is in vitro evidence that ivermectin can inhibit importins (proteins that import things into the nucleus). However, hantaviruses, like Andes virus, do not have a phase of their replication cycle that requires them to go to the nucleus.

The public health field has bent over backwards to assuage the ‘concerns’ of anti-vaxxers for almost 3 decades now. It’s not working.

The way forward is stigmatizing these child-killing freaks and mandating that every kid gets a jab. Expand access, sure but that’s not going to move the needle.

We now know the Iran war price tag is more like $50 billion - hundreds of dollars per household - and counting.

It's enough to cover all the health insurance premium credits that the Republicans got rid of for this year, and next. It could save rural hospitals, pay teachers, fix roads.

And we know where this logic takes people, because we've got approximately eleventy billion historical examples
the natural move from “bad people deserve state violence” to “victims of state violence must have been bad people.”
This weekend I learned that when someone dies in one of ICE's prisons, ICE issues a report that begins claiming they were a horrible person who deserved to die. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but it is so awful that these people and their families cannot even have a little peace even in death.
