Johnson, meanwhile, demonstrated his suitability for the job by knobbing off to play cricket with some aristo pals, and then holding a massive piss-up at his farmhouse. When he did deign to return to work, it wasn’t as a prospective Prime Minister, but in his moonlighting job as a Telegraph columnist; and it was an absolute dog’s dinner. While the markets crashed, and to prevent catastrophe the Bank of England had to spend 12 percent of our entire national annual income in a single day, Johnson got squiffy and floundered through a series of confused statements that clearly demonstrated he hadn’t got the foggiest notion what to do next. “We who are part of this narrow majority must do everything we can to reassure the Remainers”, he wrote. Is it time for another bleak-laughter break already? His article continued: “We had one Scotland referendum in 2014, and I do not detect any real appetite to have another”, to which Scotland collectively said, “Oh is that right, pal?” and hung up another Saltire. “British people will still be able to go and work in the EU; to live; to travel; to study; to buy homes and to settle down” Johnson assured us, whilst simultaneously insisting we would be able to prevent Europeans immigrants having those same rights to live, work, and study in the UK. We would, he explained, remain members of the lucrative single market, but also free ourselves from every bit of legislation that makes a single market into a single market. “There is no need to invoke Article 50”, he wrote, and declared that Leave voters were not remotely anxious about immigration. Leavers, who until now had been left to themselves to work out what Brexit meant, now found that Boris Johnson’s vision was not their own. What do you mean: we’re not leaving the single market? What do you mean: we’re not changing immigration? What do you mean: we’re not invoking Article 50? The Johnson camp said he was “tired”, and that of course we would leave the single market, which is why they’d guaranteed we wouldn’t leave it during the campaign. And then promised we would. And then not. And now it was back again, but only because Johnson was knackered. Johnson had performed so many juddering, crashing reversals in the last week that by this time he was basically corrugated. Whilst Britain was right in the middle of the biggest constitutional crisis we had seen since WW2, it was becoming clear the leader of the revolution hadn’t got a scooby doo, and was making up policy on the hoof, often while inebriated.
