I'm Coming To Australia!
Sorry for the lack of a newsletter for the past week or so. I've been traveling and doing a bunch of events. But also, I kind of needed to pause and reset...

Manny's cafe was once a hotspot for public chats about politics. But it avoided any discussion of San Francisco's role in incubating tech fascism.

Then Manny ran for office as a darling of the tech billionaire set. Now he's dropped out amid sex assault claims.

Manny Yekutiel drops out of SF supervisor race
In the hours after the Standard reported new allegations of sexual assault against the candidate, Yekutiel had lost numerous endorsements, including Mayor Daniel Lurie.

We've worked with too many organizations where people referred to themselves as changemakers but didn't want to make change actually.

Everyone is so tired. Exhausted. And I'm talking to so many friends and colleagues who are hoping for a functional institutional power to come along and take care of them, take the annoying work and worry away. An employer, a publisher, a big funder, an elected leader, etc.

I think it's just us.

Having read this book a couple times now...

this IS great
it IS awesome

You are all so lucky to get to read it for the first time! <3
So excited to unbox my new novel that all I can do is babble "this is great!" And "this is awesome!" LOL

Gonna be honest, between Jacob Gellar and Cornell (I went to Ithaca College) it’s been a real shit week. Having just written extensively about rape and assault for a recent video, all this has honestly just hit me awfully. I hate living in a culture where rape is so common, so excused and enabled.

EVERYONE! See Forgotten Island before it leaves theaters!

It's as if a Filipino who was deeply affected by Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was raised on anime, Tumblr, and was not-so-secretly a furry, got to animate a movie.

So fun and heartfelt. Dreamworks have really been killing it.

ZOMG check out this variant cover for issue three of #StarTrek Zero Point by Niclas Mortensen. I love all the covers for this issue, but this one really conveys what issue three is about!

I always ask if people think hearing a digital piano programmed to play a concerto is the same as hearing my dad — who’s been playing for 79 years and still practices hours a day — do it. And funnily enough no one has ever agreed that it is.
Every time a discourse kicks off over whether AI music, literature or art will be "as good as" the real thing, I'm always amazed more people don't cite that **there already are** creative pursuits where human-free spectacles have been available for decades, and nobody has ever wanted to watch them.
When you have no concept of how people engage with music

Several weeks ago, Phil Tippett's legendary animation studio in Berkeley, CA closed. An anonymous hero noticed a folder of CDs. This turned out to be hundreds of unseen hi-res images and videos from Star Wars, Robocop, Jurassic Park, etc. ~90 isos for you to browse:

I'm unusually irritated to discover that the turnover (samosa, empanada, clanger, patty, sambousek, etc), which is damn near universal, had not been invented at the time of my Mesopotamian game.

I was all set to write about Iron Age turnovers, only to find there weren't any.

Hmph!

Somehow not everyone is aware of fact alluded to below. So one more time:

John Roberts, Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett were all on GWBush 2000 'Florida Recount' team.

(Which made GWB first prez in 112 yrs to 'win' after losing popular vote. Now they 'impartially' rule on our future.)
Let me see if I've got this right. The team of lawyers who stole an election in Florida, and gave W the presidency, are now the Scotus team at the center of the GOP theft of our democracy.

Exactly.

THE NIGHTWARD was inspired by Caribbean MYTHOLOGY, yet reviews said they couldn't 'see' the 'Caribbean' in it.

I told you it was a secondary world sci fantasy, so excuse me? What even were your expectations? Coconut trees? Beaches? I mean...

I'm not a tour guide & this ain't Burger King.
NOTHING infuriates me more. Let us have the freedom to play and make things up and use or not use our heritage/folklore as we like, jerks! We're not writing you textbooks!

actual hot take: y'all, generally speaking, are not interested in supporting BIPOC and queer authors when they are not writing about Hurt and Trauma because it's not educational to you. even if the books have BIPOC and queer casts and are in new settings.

True not just in publishing/writing. Look at how this new Meta Muse basically jumps into the user's shit, mixes it around, gets it everywhere. Shares their address. Lies to their contacts. Sells their stuff at a low price. Do not let the vampire in. Hang garlic. Sharpen stakes.
We should treat genAI in publishing the way you’d treat a vampire trying to enter your home. You never give it permission to enter. It doesn’t matter if it‘s polite or makes generous offers or it’s *only* going to take the ones *you* don’t care about. It’s here for your blood. Don’t let it in.
What the fuck, Joyce. I don’t even read romance novels but this kind of thinking pisses me the fuck off. It further pushes that mentality that some books as “lesser” which is bullshit! All books count!
