Mediocre software dev relieved by the proliferation of Claude code because now everyone blames bugs and downtime on "vibecoding" instead of him

there is no such thing as "age verification."

All "age verification" is actually "identity verification."

You can coat it in glitter and "privacy-preserving" wrapping paper.

But in the end, mandating age verification means mandating surveillance be built into software and hardware.

Period.

Reached the point of wanting to just leave programming and do something else given the current state of that field and how AI is being forced everywhere

This is genuinely sickening

But the worst is that I dont really have other skills to do a complete career change

Fuck that and everything

On his birthday, we remember René Auberjonois, who was Odo for all 7 seasons of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and directed 8 episodes, guest starred on Enterprise, and played Colonel West in an eventually deleted scene from Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. He is very missed.

it's *technically* not the 2nd movie overall but it is the 2nd movie for TNG, but Star Trek: First Contact is the absolute best of the TNG era movies, and I would say of all the Trek movies.

Details in thread, will try to avoid spoilers.
What is the greatest-ever Second Movie in a Scifi Franchise?
I believe it must be on of these:
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan
Aliens

if only i could do this between northern virginia and chicago
one of my favorite moments of low key sci-fi world building in Star Trek is in DS9 when Sisko is called to work at Starfleet HQ in SF, but then transports home every night to his dad in New Orleans. Its the kind of quiet "duh, of course that's how it'd work" logic that's so fun to see.

Star Trek TMP gets a lot of flack for being slow and leisurely but I love the gee-whiz attitude it takes toward the Enterprise and space exploration. First time seeing the Enterprise on the big screen, so sit back because we're going to make this absolutely pornographic

That makes two Linux machines in the house, now.

It’s absolutely incredible that one of the largest Japanese-run Go servers, which has been running since 1992, is still accessed entirely via Telnet. And while most players use GUI clients that use Telnet under the hood, you can still connect manually and get ASCII graphics streamed to you

I would really like to see a "declouding" movement where consumers demand any software that doesn't strictly need to be in the cloud, be downloadable to run locally on their own hardware.

The way that things used to be.
