Ultimately it’s the people of the U.S. that voted for Trump, not the Democrats, who have to take responsibility for what happens in next four years. They know exactly what they have voted for.

The long-term challenge is how we sustain the workforce, public services and tax base as the population ages.”

How Burnham is going to try and balance proposals for a National Care Service, while supporting Mahmood's immigration policies is going to...interesting, and by "interesting" I mean fundamentally unworkable. It just cannot work with the hostile immigration policies being pushed.

I would ask what he's done to date to prove it - he's PM now.

Has he jailed water CEOs for pollution - nationalised water?
Why keep same Home Sec with same anti-migrant (racist) policies?
Why go easy on the fascist mobs?
Why continue jailing grannies peacefully protesting genocide/climate?

It's BS

Burnham shows no signs of undoing the Blue Lab culture wars, if anything his Govt is doubling down on the very worst aspects:

-Retention of Mahmoud - retrospectively changing permanent residency for legal immigrants

-Retention of Phillipson - implementation of the unworkable EHRC Code of Practice
Labour's immigration/asylum policies are profoundly racist and xenophobic. They embolden far right, undermine international law and violate basic human rights, while being even more hostile than the previous government. They can't be tweaked. They need to be scrapped.

Lots of talk of growth ahead of the Budget, as if it were a baroque puzzle. Our problem is basic. It's that we no longer support the things which facilitate growth: Europe, immigration, higher education, tax simplification, policy stability. These are all choices and could stop making them anytime.

I agree with this...

Labour have no chance in improving their standing with those that stopped supporting and voting for their party unless they remove Mahmood, stop the processes she has started and actually welcome migrants because it helps the UK economy.

If they don't, I won't change my view.
There are plenty of people here wanting us all to give Burnham, and Labour under him, a fair crack of the whip.

Get rid of Mahmood and her vile racist xeno 'policies', and I might be willing to consider doing that.

Otherwise…

That’s a hard agree from me. I am genuinely astonished at the number of otherwise sensible commentators who still discuss his latest wild actions as if they’re within the parameters of the normal policy making process.

…but it’s also potentially problematic if/when people start to see him failing to muster anything like the same level of genuine care and fluency on key policy matters. “You can do it for this, why not for *this*?”, as he evades, triangulates, and equivocates.

There is no middle ground with the kind of people who attack the RNLI.

We don’t need to ‘listen’ to them. We need to tell them where to go.

No, I think that lets them off too easily, see rest of my thread. Condemning violence/illegality is easy. But (say) chanting "send them all back" is AFAICS likely to be entirely legal in most contexts. That does not mean it is an expression of "legitimate concerns" and Ministers should say so.

Do not fall for their false narrative.
