A short thread on “legitimate concerns”. The phrase is used repeatedly by UK government ministers. The Home Secretary is at it again this week. But only ever - as far as I can tell - in one context: people’s response to the arrival of asylum seekers.

Please read whole 🧵before responding - thanks

The government urgently needs to proscribe all groups criminalising asylum seekers coming by boat and hampering the work of the RNLI.

Intimidation of the public for an ideological cause is terrorism. It's high time the culprits were charged with it.

Google is uniquely invasive. No other company surveils you so deeply or makes escape so difficult. They don’t just harvest and monetize your data—they hand it to governments on demand. Breaking free is tough, but possible. Here is how to escape.

When they say we can't afford the state pension or the NHS or any other unversal service, what they mean is they want to hoard even more wealth to add to their mountains of gold, and they're willing to let us die in the gutter rather than enjoy a retirement, to get it.

Tax is not the thing that is reducing disposable incomes of low and middle income households

For that you need to look at real term cuts in pay and benefits; and above-inflation increases in housing costs and energy bills.
Despite recent rises, effective tax rates remain below pre-financial-crisis levels for low and middle earners

🔎 New report out!

Growing up in poverty increases the likelihood of being NEET - not in employment, education or training - as a young adult, and inadequate income holds young people back from returning to earning or learning.
