Today is my first day of classes in Canada! Moving out of Texas has been super expensive and exhausting, and a little financial help would be greatly appreciated to help me start off on the right foot for the semester.

this still GENUINELY infuriates me, holy shit
it's like a diagonally-reverse Y2K situation, where legitimate catastrophe (or at least Big Fucking Problems) _was_ actually narrowly averted by the titanic efforts of countless thousands doing thankless tedious work but now everyone's like "haha y2k turned out to be such a nothing, huh?"

I feel for the bluesky devs because internet moderation at any scale is a near impossible task, but if your rules create an environment where harassment is tolerated as long as you are sufficiently polite about it, you have done something wrong
Are they threatening trans users directly? No. Trans folks in the US have been targeted repeatedly. That's awful and you have my sympathy.

Within the context of a single post we wouldn't consider it a direct threat or targeting a protected category. Ie send trans folks to concentration camps.

Corporations are not people.

Their money is not speech.

They should not be able to buy politicians.

It's funny how every bluesky dev keeps posting shit like "my chatbot is telling me I am becoming an immortal cyborg head and all who oppose me are antisocial curs who shall be crushed beneath my powerful metal feet"

And then like the next day the site goes down for 6 solid hours due to vibecode

Hey folks, all the signal boosts hugely appreciated, especially for this one as it's a mature rated game which cuts down on my viewership. Your help is always welcome!

I think we ought to start demanding that all Trump Towers be called Kennedy and Trump Towers, and if they refuse to change the name on them, we take a wrecking ball to them.

The problem is that "while you weren't looking the tech industry was comprehensively taken over by a cult based around a piece of Harry Potter fanfic" is self-evidently an absolutely ridiculous claim that can't possibly have happened, which is a real problem given that it 100% did happen.
The U.S. AI industry is being run by a batshit rationalist sex cult, and no, I am not being hyperbolic - they’re genuinely Like That:

Can you spineless centrist Dems even let us MOURN that you've thrown us under the bus AGAIN? Are we even allowed to do that, or is that still too "controversial"?

As folks have pointed out, maybe I'm wrong to approach this from the "efficient enlightened self-interest" angle.

Because what may be happening is a bunch of people thinking, categorically, that it's impossible to move candidates. That, like Republicans, they're just weather. Can't change them.
Almost like we should try to convince one dude to have better messaging, and that would be a better and more efficient use of our time than trying to convince each of the thousands of people who might have been turned off by it that they need to ignore that and vote for him anyway.

They are being met with people who are pretending that we are in the last stages of the trolley problem, who are collapsing the years of work and organizing and political shifts between now and then into a finger snap, and saying "IF YOU WON'T VOTE FOR HIM YOU LOVE FASCISM."

Which is nonsense.

But then again, nihil sub sole novum
I can't blame people who feel like they can't vote for Biden.

I can't blame people who feel like they have to.

I live in a place that's made me believe a lot more in incremental electoral politics. I am also unbelievably safe, in my person and in my community and in my state.

So... fuck, man.

Julia Serano just pointed out, either trans people are an important enough group that candidates shouldn't risk alienating them, or, if they're unimportant and okay to alienate, then you must think they can't change the outcome of the election. So you can't blame them for losing. Can't be both.

Like, If there's a conversation internal to and between trans folks about what their best move is, tactically, to secure their rights? Grand. I'm not part of that conversation.

The tone of that conversation will be *very different* from the acceptable comments *to* trans folks from the outside.

Why do you take no responsibility for that behavior turning off the voters it is now your job to retain?

Why do you not spend your time finding other people treating a vulnerable group like that and convincing them to fucking stop?

"This is your only choice, shut the fuck up and take it" is certainly one way to campaign. As is "You're being stupid and childish and anything bad that happens you'll deserve."

I don't think it's a good way to campaign, personally. I think you might be bad at your job, if that's how you do it.

If you think it's really important, in the short term, to vote for a compromise candidate while doing other work to protect the vulnerable people that candidate's words or actions might harm?

Then your job is also campaigning. You have to campaign now, to convince people.
