Today I found out that Harry Houdini was so pissed at mediums pretending to be real and preying on grief that he instructed his wife to try to contact him after he died. When they failed to produce the code he left her with, she was like “tada—for his last trick, Houdini proved you’re full of shit”

All maps are wrong. This is not a bug, it is a feature. That's the whole point. We already have an entire planet waiting for you outside.
A map is useful because it condenses, slices and reveals something that we can't get from a person's vantage point. A map is useful because of its abstraction.

When I started writing about Supreme Court expansion, you couldn’t get the question *asked* in a poll.
The first time I saw it actually polled, it was 8%.

Now, we here.
Kind of a buried lede in the results of this Supreme Court approval rating poll from Marquette: Overall support for Supreme Court expansion, which even Democratic politicians were dismissing as "radical" just a few years ago, is now at 53 percent today.marquette.edu/2026/09/marq...

What is possible is structured by the political environment, and although Democrats can shape that environment, it is not infinitely malleable, and that should be taken seriously as well.

No, and nothing I said suggested that. You should try to reply to the things people say, rather than the things you imagine they think.

We can still get 3k+ whistles out the door to people in need in under 24 hours and they are free.
People in California who are facing a terrible ICE surge: remember that if you need whistles, we are still sending them out for free.

In fact, we just passed 1.7 million whistles sent out.

Under financial capitalism, profit is the prime directive. But care is too labor-intensive to be profitable at the level of compensation needed for sustainability. And it can't be easily automated at the level of quality required for human needs.

So, historically, men have used the privilege afforded to them by patriarchy to push the "unprofitable" work of care onto women, making it easier for them to hoard the more profitable (and thus higher-status) work for themselves. And companies encouraged this, because it meant more profits for them.

Charles Dickens witnessed a public execution in 1849. He wrote a scathing letter to 'The Times' calling for the end to such a practice.

200 years later and here we are again. Public executions, fear mongering about immigrants, and (basically) poor laws. Go read Bleak House and get some compassion.

I've been immersed in research on Reconstruction in Lousiana and it's a very difficult truth to absorb that the white terrorist movement in the South was among the most successful terrorist movements in global history. Took 10 years but it won a total & complete victory through murder and atrocity.

Young teenagers are less likely to identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual than a few years ago, according to a new analysis.

“It really does look like a free fall,” Jean Twenge, a professor of psychology, said. “But what’s causing it is unclear.”

Just thinking how it's maddening that we have legislation and court jurisdiction over specific human organs.

It sounds insane if like half the states will pursue you for murder if you refuse to donate a kidney to a family member who needs it, or jailing providers of lasik or plastic surgery.
