Algae give zero fucks. My heroes.
Trump spent a lot of time criticizing other administrations, but he’s surely realizing now it wasn’t that simple. Blooming algae began to turn the water green in the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool shortly after it was refilled following the completion of a $14.2 million restoration project that

It’s out! There are so many fun back stories with this project’s origin story & how it reshaped my career trajectory.

For now, plz welcome my lab’s culture collection of #Symbiodiniaceae associated bacteria! & the many siderophores they produce! 🧪

Widespread siderophore production among Symbiodiniaceae-associated bacteria

I am normally a pretty positive person, but this feels like a death sentence for life science funding in the US.
Cool, so NSF is now going to be used to essentially launder money to tech bros because universities are just too cumbersome and disciplinary oversight and regulations and accountability are all just too stifling for innovation.

$1.5B for “X-Labs.”

NSF's mission is to advance the progress of science, a mission accomplished by funding proposals for research and education made by scientists, engineers, and educators from across the country.

My students are learning bioinformatic analysis and making sweet, sweet plots. It is so fun to see filters you collected for several years finally come to life. So impressed!

New PI record unlocked: two #NSF proposal rejections within an hour of one another. Had been pending since Aug 2025. Did anyone in oceanography get funded? I will feel better knowing the whole program didn’t just get axed…

I echo how dire the situation is regarding science funding. The worst for those early career trying to get started. It also isn’t for lack of trying. I have two submitted grants still pending from August 2025. Clicking on the OG post, the numbers getting funded are just dismal.
I don't think people fully appreciate how apocalyptic things are for US science. I haven't had any new funding since 2024, but I'm still ok since typical grants are for three years. This means next year I will be completely out of funding and will have to fire everyone in the lab. It's not great.

I would not pass a final exam in gift wrapping. Like would flunk the mid-term tbh. In my defense, it is kind of rounded…

Anyone use case studies in their oceanography classes? If so, mind sharing examples? Bonus if they are biology focused. #oceanography

Grading the final assignment in my biological oceanography class and found my personal ethos so distilled, it is amazing.

Thanks, I hate it. 🧪
The Trump administration is recommending the elimination of the scientific research division at NOAA.

What about my disabled for life brother? When he complains for not getting a check, who is going to be brave enough to call him a ‘fraudster’ to my face?
Trump’s commerce secretary Howard Lutnick says if Social Security skipped a check, his mother-in-law wouldn’t complain—and if you would, it indicates you are probably a fraudster. Insane.
