Hey @ericlipton.nytimes.com 👋

AI is not “evolving” on its own.

*People* are choosing how to build it. *People* are choosing how to train it. *People* are choosing how to run it.

Maybe the problem is that they are the *wrong people* to make these choices.
OpenAI’s top scientist, in a blog post on Sunday, warns that artificial intelligence is evolving so rapidly that it is becoming increasingly difficult for humans to understand and control it.

Here is the post:

And a couple of small excerpts--clear warnings.

Seems like a good time to post quote from Stewart & Norvig (3rd edition) of events in 1997.

"Kasparov said that he felt a “new kind of intelligence” across the board from him. Newsweek magazine described the match as “The brain’s last stand.” The value of IBM’s stock increased by $18 billion."

In a "collaboration" (which we left), someone used an LLM to make a "summary" on topics for the project (without our consent) in which published research ideas from @olivia.science & me understandably popped up, but were credited to men, while our names showed up nowhere in the "summary".

New article examining the incestuous connections between the TESCREAL movement and the ASI race. I guarantee you'll find this interesting--I show how these people all know each other, have hung out and partied together, and share the same eschatological vision. Check it out!

But WILDWOOD and FORGOTTEN ISLAND?
I will RUN to theaters to see those, day one.

Because just from the trailers, I can see the love the artists put in & both look like a blast to have worked on

HEXED looks like an exec said “magic & witches are popular rn so this’ll make money”

There is one really bad AGI-doubter/X-risk-doubter argument that really grinds my gears.

The argument basically, is that perfectly *simulating/emulating* human cognition would be computationally intractable.

And like... ok maybe. But that's completely beside the point.

Ok, Will. I can explain 🧵

1. Platner did not just suddenly wake up saying the right words. We know this because of the leaked content from his reddit account "P-Hustle". The leak contained posts/replies going back even to 2018 in some cases.

(...)
Here’s the thing with Platner: what is his actual deal? We have a lot of information about this guy. He hasn’t been a longtime fighter for his community or progressivism or populist causes. He just woke up one day and decided to start saying the right words. Well, okay, a lot of people can do that.

As a party to the Genocide Convention, the U.S. has a legal obligation to obey our own laws, stop weapons sales to Israel, and demand a permanent ceasefire.

End the genocide. Ceasefire now.
