Excellent post. One aspect of the "democratic purism" discussed is that it's based on the dangerous misunderstanding that democracy is *entirely* defined by voting and neither requires nor is compatible with any other institutions.
New Substack post: 'The Will Of The People'

Populism can be seen, among other things, as a purity project.

Kemi Badenoch labels Andy Burnham a 'Paddington Bear Prime Minister'. What is that even supposed to mean?

I just read the first line of this and had that electric tingle in my body that said *truth*.

YES.
The reason young people vibe with liminal horror is that the wealthy have spent the last half century destroying all anthropological spaces they can exist in, leaving *only* non-places

I’m loving the “well akshually he didn’t REALLY mean let Iran take out Los Angeles and San Diego” excuses today.

Cool. Explain the assholes in the crowd who thought it was fucking hilarious.

Loving #GBBO with Nigella, and this week with families joining the bakers.

Come for the cheesecake, stay for the family drama. Bring it.

Archer is most famous here for suing for defamation over an article about him paying for sex and then later going to jail for perjuring himself during the trial. Here's a statement from the London Collective of Prostitutes.

Basically what every kid needs. Now, salient points:

1. This is a right. No one should have to protest for this.
2. IF someone does, it should be the parents at least alongside their children if not instead of.
French school protests to continue on Monday with 500 schools shut. One thing I think it's important to note; these kids are not trying to overthrow they state - they are calling for more teachers, better exam support and more resources for schools
Explained: What are French students protesting about?
Protests by teenagers outside their schools have shaken France in recent days, with students blockading entrances to their institutions and security forces on occasion responding with tear gas.

Sigh...

Sam Alito, I really hope your daughter Laura has disowned you and is now a flaming liberal.
Samuel Alito: We won't overturn Obergefell because it's engendered reliance interests.

Jan Crawford: Well, many people had organized their lives around Roe v. Wade.

Alito: No, they didn't. Women merely had an "abstract" interest in "ideas about the kind of society that they were going to live in."
The Alito Court: A rare interview with the influential Supreme Court justice
Justice Samuel Alito discussed his opinion in the Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade, the leaked draft and its aftermath, same-sex marriage rights and why he's not retiring yet.

Absolutely. You can 100% be against the Netanyahu government and the genocide happening in Gaza and the gratuitous violence in the West Bank without denying Israel's right to exist.

This motion should never ever even have made it to written form, let alone been on a ballot.
What does it mean to be a member-led party when the Greens have 230,000 members but only 1835 voted on the Zionism Is Racism motion? Doesn't seem like you can claim the result as the iron-clad democratic will of the membership while dismissing the concerns of actual democratically elected MPs

From a historical perspective it's a genuinely strange state of affairs that the Church of England turns out to be too woke for much of the modern right. But really it just feels like: having a consistent moral code that demands taking Lessers and Outgroup seriously is impossible for populist right.

Theology aside, it's always very telling that there is a cadre of people who want to give Britain credit for abolishing slavery, while simultaneously railing against anything that illustrates doing so was worthwhile.
