“We’re going to a marina for a college alumni reception” did not give me the vibe of “this is a hipster place next to a working fishing dock, and you will be overdressed simply by wearing closed-toed shoes”
JR and I are still learning our cultural language differences and tonight it shows. I told them an event was at “a marina”, which meant casual boaty vibes to me. To JR, that meant yacht club. And now I understand why they were concerned about being underdressed in a suit.
