1/30 Look under the stern of any ship and you find two things that took thousands of years to get right: the rudder that steers her and the propeller that drives her. One began as an oar held over the side. The other began as a pump for lifting water. #maritimehistory

What was a "Black Inferno" (Ottoman Turkish: Kara Cehennem)?

It was the name of a particular Maltese warship given by the Ottomans! A 🧵

I used to think that Ottoman historical names always the same (in the documents), until I read a list of Greek, Genoese/Venetian names in an 18th-c. Ottoman document.

It's about individuals, most likely rowers, deployed either on the galleys or at the Naval Arsenal.

HMS Hibernia was a King Edward VII-class pre-dreadnought battleship of the Royal Navy. On 4 May 1912 a Short S.27 seaplane took off from a flying-off platform. This was the first launch of an aeroplane from a warship underway www.destinationsjourney.com/historical-m... #maritimehistory #NavalHistory

Some of the paintings I've made of sailing ships, spanning the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries.

The full portfolio, including the stories behind them and close up photos, can be found on the Age of Sail gallery on my website.

1/32 Imagine your ship limps into a foreign port, badly damaged. You have no money, nobody there knows you, and a letter home takes months. For over 2,000 years, captains had one way out: borrow money and put up the ship itself as collateral. #maritimehistory #maritimelaw

#OTD On October 29, 1814, Fulton (Demologos), the first American steam warship, launched in NY. The advanced catamaran hid its paddle wheel and machinery below the waterline for protection. Carrying auxiliary sails, the U.S. Navy received it in 1816.
