In grad school, I used to get a pot of tea and work at the local coffee shop until it closed at 10pm many evenings. We stopped by on our way through town recently, and now it closes at 2pm.
I find it fascinating that in the 1990s, the US managed to re-create early twentieth-century Vienna café culture only to have it gradually decay over the first quarter of the twenty-first century such that now most coffee shops are closed by six PM.

Both of these threads hold much worth grappling with. I also agree that we reached this moment largely because Covid served as an accelerator, and most of us hold trauma we can’t quite name or process.
I study sexual violence and I think people would be surprised by how often people still bring up COVID once they know they’re talking to someone who is willing to hear about trauma.
One of my Crank Theories of Everything, at least of Everything in the Recent Past, is that we are dealing (badly) with COVID trauma we’d mostly prefer to pretend never happened.

Two things can be true: if the 2016 Dem machine didn’t rally against Sanders’ popularity—AND if Sanders had checked the behavior of his Bernie Bros back then—those same folks wouldn’t have as much ground to stand on now to say the Platner allegations are about structural barriers and “the system.”

I hear there are people who don’t get migraines, and I wonder if they are bored? Utterly blissful? Super productive because there’s no background processes constantly calculating what combo of food, movement, dehydration, meds, weather, sleep, hormones, and/or stress might accidentally do them in?

Niche appeal post, but the company behind the Nugget Play Couch put out a statement about the VRA and are donating to You Can Vote NC as a result, and I’m thrilled because we were planning on buying my kiddo one this weekend after we had to toss her old one due to mold issues in our house.
