I have not yet run across this and I still hate it. I know authors don't always have the final say on all aspects of their book, but this strikes me as something worth taking a stand on.
A new thing that I hate:

I’m reading a book right now that uses endnote citations, and directs the reader to SCAN A QR CODE to access the endnotes.

This is appalling. We need to strengthen protections for LGBTQ+ students -- not weaken them.

Remember: In New York, LGBTQ+ students are still protected against discrimination in schools by state laws that go beyond Title IX’s and the federal Constitution’s protections.

Science peeps: Looks like SciENcv updated the digital certificate used to sign Biosketch and Current & Pending documents without notification. The old certificate expires Saturday, September 26, 2026.

SciENcv docs before that date may fail validation in eRA Commons delaying or blocking submission.

Turned down last week:
2 festivals with no budget for speakers
1 writing course with no budget for teachers
1 film project with no budget to option the book - plus they wanted me to write the screenplay. For free.
Don't do it, kids. Don't work for free. Because to them, what's free is worthless.

Manuscripts and grant proposals submitted for *peer* review are typically meant to be confidential. I'm fairly confident the text of these confidential documents have now been uploaded to an LLM. I don't know which one, but I'm guessing it wasn't a 'local' LLM sandboxed on someone's computer.

I resent having to use my remaining brain power to deal with AI
My undergrad large-lecture syllabus is now ready. Here's all of what I had to do to fend off AI:

-Physical copy of the textbook is required (so material can't be auto-summarized). The mechanism for this is that tests and quizzes are open book, but only the physical copy can be used.

New Yorkers had to subsidize the $117 million that the NYPD paid out for misconduct lawsuits in 2025 alone, even though most of them were never personally abused by a cop.

Where's your worried op-ed on that one?

The assistive tech angle does have some legs. I'm a technologist & assistive tech (AT) is something I have some skin in the game with. Let me tell you why buying assistive tech from Meta et al is a terrible idea:

I think both can be the problem
OPINION: "College professors like me may be tempted to look the other way if we suspect a student is cheating, or try to solve the cheating problem by changing the ways we evaluate students," Austin Sarat writes.

Austin Sarat writes that college student cheating habits are based on more than just artificial intelligence.

Before my visit, Raw Farm's founder Mark McAfee told me he's a trailblazer:

“I’ve put a couple kids in the hospital, and they have been sick, but they recovered," he said.

"But here’s the thing: I’m a pioneer. And I’m going against the grain here. I’m climbing a mountain they say you can’t climb."

This is equally true of quantitative data. Ethical and privacy management are essential parts of responsible data sharing policies and practices.

Also, there are many alternatives to "pure" open sharing that help to address when confidentiality and transparency are at odds.
NEW from me in @pnas.org on the risks of data sharing with qualitative research:

"Today, confidentiality risks are amplified by social media, surveillance, and AI tools, which make ample data about people publicly available, thus making deidentification less effective"
