It may be understandable for people in a small village to wonder about the impact of 1,000 mainly young men suddenly moving into the area, but I've never heard of any village voting to leave the UK because an army barracks (to take a random example) was built nearby.

Billionaires are uniquely vulnerable to being driven into rabbit holes of delusion by generative AI because it talks exactly like how all their meat sycophants talk.

They've long, long since forgotten what it is like to talk to someone who is not simpering bullshit at them.

But if it’s smart enough for all that, why isn’t it smart enough that you can just say “control the temperature in the usual way that one would expect of a thermostat, without hurting anyone or doing anything weird”? “Make a normal amount of paperclips, not too many, and don’t wipe out humanity”.

I know there are problems with the metaphor, but fire is a good way to think about AI. It’s a fundamental, culture-transforming technology that empowers people to destroy or create. Without fire, so many horrible things would never have happened, as would so many great things.

All the money in the world won’t make Reform’s moronic policies workable. It won’t make their people less racist or idiotic. It won’t sort out their ridiculous egos or end the investigations. It won’t make the majority of us loathe them any less. In fact, the money may well bury them. Let’s hope so.

£72 million from 2 individuals - both of whom have faced questions about money laundering, both of whom live/d overseas to avoid tax - is not compatible with democracy.

I don't care if it's Reform, Labour or whoever. We can't function like this. Not for long.

So how do we fix it?

My plan:

I think the statistically likelihood of venal, old men, psychotic billionaires, and racists in positions of power within nuclear-armed states of killing some or all of us is substantially higher than AI.

Tried to rewatch The West Wing and it’s too optimistic to be watchable now. The Handmaid’s Tale, meanwhile, hits different — not because it’s gotten less bleak, but because the gap between “warning” and “documentary” has shrunk.
