remember: it saved no net money, social services US citizens are getting cut, and left the US in a weaker place geopolitically. none of the debates about fiscal responsibility, obligation to US citizens first, or 'hard choices' actually apply. they're all bullshit. killed people for nothing at all.
Still kind of inconceivable how many people died or will die because of the death of USAID. And the world’s richest man did it almost as a joke

are young people today aware that there was an active effort 20-25 years ago to stop depicting smoking as cool and glamorous because people got tired of watching their loved ones die of cancer and heart disease from something preventable? seems like classic history repeating itself stuff
I genuinely hate the push to make smoking a thing again.
I have watched so many drawn out, ugly, painful deaths from smoking. It makes everything disgusting. It enslaves us to the worst kinds of corporations. There’s ZERO positive here.

Cuba's minister of energy confirmed reserves are gone — with just enough diesel left to keep hospitals online. The UN has classified Washington's blockade a humanitarian crisis.

This is why the democrats are almost as unpopular as Trump
New: A surge in calls among Democrats to pursue Trump’s impeachment is hitting a wall with party leaders, who believe it will distract from their midterm focus on costs and corruption, according to interviews with over a dozen Democrats.

What's scary about this story is the surveillance it hints at. This trans woman had changed her name, legally, but chose not to change her gender marker. She was apparently flagged in the DMV system as trans and her license was invalidated under a law that supposedly only concerned gender markers.
This story, from @natezuke.bsky.social, is absolutely wild. A trans woman who never changed her gender marker was issued a letter invalidating her license. At the DMV they cut up her license, which had an "M" marker.

She’d Never Changed Her Gender Marker. Kansas Invalidated Her License Anyway. — Assigned
A trans Kansas resident recently changed her name but not her gender marker on her license, fearing what Kansas may do if she did. The Kansas DMV still flagged her ID.

we did it! a perfectly structured democracy. it's got checks, it's got balances. this thing is made to last. there's only one weakness: bad guys. if somehow some bad guys who don't care about decorum got elected they could basically just tip the whole thing over. luckily such men are unelectable

I don't seriouspost that much anymore, mostly because I'm tired and more cynical about the efficacy of the effort, but I'll give it a try for old time's sake.
It has been de rigueur for many professional posters to insist on participating in American democratic processes as a remedy for discontent.
