Holy shit, I am pleasantly surprised by the news for once? For friends abroad, that’s the UK’s national federation of unions. It’s about time the beast awakened.

older games often have a display centric approach to real-time rendering, like, painting lighting into object textures was very common, or straight up using photographs as textures

this lets you take very direct control over the look!

modern rendering is different

(short thread)
Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer (2002)

how the did they get the water to look like that, this is incredible

I don't mean the reflections, look at the shape of the wave as it moves, the lighting, the glow..

This and the game loop are **amazing** and needs to be studied

This is lost technology oh my god

Years ago I made a thread on Twitter about the history of Chinese & Taiwanese RPGs.

Scroll of Taiwu will get an official English release today and leave Early Access after 8 years - IMHO, it's one of the most influential indies of the past decade, so it's a good time to repost & update the thread!🧵

Marathon free week and despite it being something I would be interested in trying it would involve me booting into Windows for like the first time in like months? Like the linux journey has not been painless but does not fill me with absolute dread the way that modern Windows does. Weird feeling

I've written a book! Next Level: Making Games That Make Themselves is the story of procedural generation - the tech behind games like Minecraft and Dwarf Fortress. It's about how it works, the games that use it, and the art and magic behind it.

Out May 7th, in bookshops: linktr.ee/next_level 🎲🔮

Figured I should probably post about some #NextFest demos (I talk about them elsewhere but why not here as well). Starting off with something on the chill end, just some great writing and art really help the shop sim stand out

I hope it's of use, not least because goddamn I forgot how long blog posts take to write.

Finished writing my 2025 goty post before the end of the year! Go me! https://lim-ak.bearblog.dev/game-of-the-year-2025/ A ton of great video games released this year. I'll do some more posts here tomorrow from the list, but here's a couple shout outs for now.

Didn't quite get my #procjam idea done in time (I know it's a soft time limit but wanted to upload it) but it's still a nice functional map generator in it's current state. https://lim-ak.itch.io/arctic-generator

Finished playing the Rose and Violet story mod for Persona 5 Royal that has you play as Kasumi taking over the Joker role. It is as ambitious and messy as that undertaking sounds. Has a ton of rough edges but what an absolutely charming thing.

Finally got around to installing LineageOS on a phone. Still pretty far outside normal person install process, but I'm happy that I'm now on something able to get updates on again. Less happy that my new phone is a step down from what I was using, but it is what it is.

Started playing #Expedition33 and really liking the atmosphere and world. But I don't think I can remember ever reacting so poorly to a game's mechanics. Put it to story, turned off the qte's in the first 2 hours. Truly hated the combat system from the jump.

Wasn't expecting to hit credits on #BluePrince yesterday, just went on a hell of a run that had me solving a bunch of big puzzles on my list but plenty more left for me to go find. No screenshots for bsky as I can't spoiler them.

Week 1 being on Linux Mint as the main on my mini PC. Not a great experience! To be fair I'm judging it by the standard of could I recommend this to a normal person. But playing music takes a couple seconds to come on because the audio subsystem has gone to sleep is a ridiculous problem to search.

Finally getting around to installing Linux Mint. I'll never really be free of Microsoft's bullshit but maybe I can get some of my life away from them.
